Sunday Reading for September 18, 2022

September 18, 2022
  1. What Are the Qualities of a Good Reviewer (via SBRE Brown). Few pen reviewers have been at this longer than Stephen, and it was quite interesting to hear his thoughts on what makes a good pen reviewer.

  2. Last of the Summer Blues: Inkebara Petrol Dark & Sea Green (via a fleeting ripple). I’ve not yet had the chance to use any Inkebara inks, though I’m always happy to see new ink brands coming to market, especially small independent ones.

  3. BigIDesign Pens Overview (via Writing at Large). BigIDesign is sort of local to me (Chattanooga) so I always keep an eye on what they’re up to. They make excellent refill-versatile pens, in a variety of formats.

  4. Otto Hutt Design 07 Fountain Pen Review (via SBRE Brown). The Design 07 is the flagship of the Otto Hutt line, and I’m very happy to see the brand gain increasing exposure in a measured, sustainable way.

  5. The Nafety for Safety: Three New No-Nonsense Pens & Inks for My Currently Inked (via mnmlscholar). A big shout-out to the Iroshizuku inks, which used to be the “next big thing” but have since become part of mainstream pendom. They are nearly always an excellent choice for any form of writing, and make outstanding everyday workhorses.

  6. Customizing, Personalizing, and Outright Hacking: A mnml Digest (via mnmlscholar). Once you overcome the fear of screwing up and start hacking/customizing your own stationery, the possibilities are endless, especially once you start swapping accessories between brands….

  7. Don’t Call It a Comeback: Rickshaw Sinclair Model R Review (via The Poor Penman). Another great look at the Nock-Rickshaw Sinclair Model R. I’m interested to hear what people think as the new Sinclairs hit the market.

  8. Rhorer & Klingner Sketchink Lilly (via Fountain Pen Pharmacist). The R&K “sketch” series is another one of those undersung ink series that has major fans, including members of my local pen group. I need to get over my instinctive hesitation at using permanent inks in fountain pens and try them out.

  9. Leonardo Momento Magico 2022: New and Improved (via Pen Addict - Kimberly). I have yet to get my hands on a Momento Magico, but since I’ve made the decision to largely move on from the Momento Zero Grande - it really is just a touch too large for my preference - I may need to give it a try.

  10. Ferris Wheel Press FerriTales (via Well-Appointed Desk). Jesi sold a ton of these inks in San Francisco, and for good reason - Ferris Wheel Press continues to impress with their lineup, especially their multichromatic and shading inks.

In Case You Missed It…

This week on the blog, I published two pieces of planner-themed content. One is a broad overview of pens that are compatible with the Plotter system pen holders, and the other is the first installment of an anticipated multipart series on Notebook Systems. I start out by discussing the various categories of systems, ranging from ring binders to Traveler’s-style folios.

New This Week in the Curated Shop

The big news this week was a launch of a new brand: Nahvalur (formerly Narwhal)! The Nahvalur Original Plus is a revamped version of the Narwhal Original, which I first saw at the Philadelphia Pen Show a few years ago. I like the more subtle design, and we’ve also added the Nahvalur Nautilus in gorgeous Stylophora Berry ebonite. Note that we are running a promotion through the end of the month to welcome Nahvalur, in which all Nahvalur pens ship with a 4ml ink sample hand-picked to match your pen! Be sure to check out this week’s Thursday Drops post for further details on this offer and other new arrivals, including a restock of Sumkin (Soumkine) undated hardcover planners.

Many Thanks for Your Shop Support, and Please Consider T.G.S. Patreon!

We’ve been surprised at the level of enthusiasm and support for our curated retail strategy over the past couple of months, and after careful consideration are beginning to build out our inventory with more brands and product categories. I love managing this aspect of T.G.S., as it offers me the opportunity to directly put great stationery - including brands I feel are underappreciated and underemphasized - into your hands. For those who want to support T.G.S. without necessarily adding to their accumulation, the Patreon Program offers two options for tiers of support: $3 and $5, and plan on making monthly meetups, pen show events, and periodic exclusive content the primary benefits. Of course, Patreon members will continue to get first access to periodic sample sales, with right of first refusal on gently used pens.

In the coming weeks you’ll be reading a lot about updates and upgrades to the daily carry!

Sunday Reading for September 11, 2022

September 11, 2022
  1. April Went to DC and SF Pen Shows 2022: Part I (via Penguin’s Creative). April write’s up the first part of her August Pen Show travels, one of the handful of us to hit both shows!

  2. Kilk Orient Fountain Pen (via Pencilcase Blog). Kilk is a Turkish penmaker who I’m starting to see all over the place. They have an interesting design, and I’d love to get my hands on one at some point.

  3. Happy Birthday to Me! (via Pen Addict - Kimberly). Happy birthday Kimberly! I fully support the “Birthday Pen” concept.

  4. Crystal Clear: Pilot Custom Heritage 92 (via a fleeting ripple). An often overlooked workhorse pen, the Pilot Custom Heritage 92 piston filler is an excellent option for those looking for a pen that simply disappears as you get work done.

  5. Early Thoughts on the Tibaldi No 60 Fountain Pen (via Fountain Pen Blog). Tibaldi has definitely gotten some traction with their recent releases of vintage-inspired designs and materials.

  6. The Bits and Bobs of My Teaching Bullet Journal: Meeting Logs (via mnmlscholar). I enjoy reading about others’ work notebooks and how stationery gets used every day.

  7. Aurora’s Matera and Deserto Are Gorgeous and (Nearly) Flawless (via UK Fountain Pens). Is Anthony back? Even if it’s only temporary, it’s great to see him back (and these are some very pretty Auroras).

  8. Pilot Acroball Ballpoint Pen (via Comfortable Shoes Studio). Pilot’s Acroball was conceived as their answer to the Uniball Jetstream. It’s a good pen, but has never taken off to the same degree.

  9. Pelikan Edelstein Apatite (via Pen Addict - Sarah). While I’m not a huge fan of Edelstein ink, I do know that many of you look forward to Pelikan’s annual release. This one doesn’t seem very exciting, to be honest.

  10. Pen Show Magic: The SF Pen Show 2022 (via Well-Appointed Desk). Julia has a guest post recapping her experiences at this year’s San Francisco Pen Show!

We’re giving away this Sinclair Model-R pen case. Be sure to check out the details. Giveaway closes at 11:59pm tonight.

In Case You Missed It… DON’T MISS THE GIVEAWAY!

This week on the blog, I offered my first impressions of the Nock Co. Sinclair Model R, which Nock brought back in collaboration with San Francisco-based Rickshaw Bagworks and revealed at the 2022 San Francisco Pen Show. Most importantly, don’t miss the opportunity to participate in the giveaway to win one of these cases - either by commenting on the Giveaway post or liking the Instagram post.

I also reviewed two new red inks I’ve been using recently: Laban Ares Red from the Greek Mythology Series, and Dominant Industries “Romania Red,” which is a good replacement for the legendary Montblanc Alfred Hitchcock.

This Week in the Curated Shop

Shop news included the arrival of some new cover and case options from Midori, including a new “vertical A5” notebook sleeve/portfolio in natural undyed goat leather. We’re also happy to announce a full restock of the Penco “Perfection” bullet pen series, in both the chrome, brass, and matte black and “Perfection Light” formats. Hightide hourglasses in 30 and 15-minute intervals also made a return to the shop and are selling fast. Stay tuned as we re-up favorites and bring in some new arrivals!

[UPDATE: As of Monday, September 12, 2022, we have added Nahvalur (formerly Narwhal) to our selection of brands! Please check out the “Original Plus” vacuum fillers, with more on the way!]

A few more San Francisco prizes inadvertently omitted from my recaps!

Sunday Reading for September 3, 2022: Labor Day Weekend Edition

September 4, 2022
  1. 2022 SF Pen Show: Definitely Not a Quick Recap (via Pen Addict - Kimberly). Kimberly and I are apparently locked in (friendly) competition over who can generate the longest recap of the SF Pen Show. This is a great one and extremely detailed.

  2. Show Recap: 2022 San Francisco Pen Show (via Well-Appointed Desk). Jesi was stationed at the Dromgoole’s ink rack all weekend, and she sold a TON of ink (including six bottles of Wearingeul to me).

  3. Thinking via the Notes I Take, a mnml Digest (via mnmlscholar). Given all of the discussions of notebooks and planners and journaling last weekend, including a couple of in-depth seminars, notetaking and the purpose of the notes I take is something at the forefront of my own mind as well.

  4. Ferris Wheel Press Cream of Earl Grey (via Fountain Pen Pharmacist). So this is one of the most intriguing colors in the Ferris Wheel Press lineup, IMHO, but is very, very, VERY light.

  5. Private Reserve Black Cherry (The New Formula) (via Inkdependence). With my love for all things red-black, you would think that I would’ve tried this one already. No such luck. I may need to pick up a bottle.

  6. Col-o-ring Update: Cover Colors & FOLIO! (via Well-Appointed Desk). The Col-o-ring Folio - the largest Col-o-ring EVER, is now available for purchase! While I have no idea what I would do with it, I want one!

  7. On the Differences Between Grips (via KraftyKats). Chloe discusses an important factor in selecting your pen of choice, which may also present a reason to visit a pen show - if your grip tends to be sensitive, a show (or your local pen store) offers you the opportunity to try before you buy.

  8. Witches: Lamy Azurite (via a fleeting ripple). The Lamy Crystal inks haven’t received much attention from the blogosphere lately, even though I’m generally a fan of Lamy inks and they’re always priced competitively.

  9. Long-Term Thoughts on the Visconti Rembrandt Fountain Pen (via Fountain Pen Blog). I love reading “long term” reviews of favorite fountain pens, and whether people’s opinions of certain pens stay the same having used them for years at a time. I need to be better about revisiting prior reviews.

  10. Pelikan M205 Apatite Special Edition Demonstrator (via Pelikan’s Perch). Just in time for the announcement of this year’s Pelikan Hubs, Pelikan has revealed the M205 “Apatite” demonstrator to match this year’s special edition Edelstein ink.

In Case You Missed It….

This week on the blog, it was all about recapping a great weekend at the San Francisco Pen Show. My recaps actually started last Saturday, in real time, when I discussed Friday at the show. On Wednesday, I offered my thoughts on what makes the San Francisco show so well-run in general (hint: it involves more classes and seminars, and a broader, more diverse array of vendors), and yesterday I did a very extended walkthrough of everything I took home from the show. Now I just have to figure out where to start with the review content….

Did I mention we restocked on the Penco Perfection Bullet Pens, both the plastic version and the metal in Gold, Silver, and Matte Black? For those who have asked, yes, they clip quite well to the Plotter Mini-5. ;)

New This Week in the Shop Plus a Labor Day Promotion

Paper, paper, and more paper! I was low on most of the paper brands we stock here in the T.G.S. Curated Shop, including customer favorite Midori MD Cotton. (For those who have asked, the MD Cotton Paper is the same paper that is used in those letterpress specialty Plotter refills pictured in yesterday’s review.) We also have more Clairefontaine Triomphe and Seyes-ruled paper. Every Thursday I index new arrivals and features in a dedicated post. And through Labor Day (Monday at 11:59pm), we’re running a special promotion where all orders will receive a free gift, whether that be some washi tape, an ink sample, or a pen/pencil! No coupon code needed. Just place your orders and enjoy!

Sunday Reading for August 28, 2022 (SF Pen Show Edition)

August 28, 2022
  1. Ferris Wheel Press Brush Fountain Pen Review (via Blake’s Broadcast). I’ve not had the chance to review the FWP “Brush” fountain pen, but I talked to quite a few people this weekend who enjoy the nibs on these pens.

  2. A Recipe for Disaster: Holiday Carry (via a fleeting ripple). If nothing else, fountain pens and travel always leads to some great memories (and stories)!

  3. What I Brought on My Trip (via Inkredible Colours). I always love to see a good travel layout, especially when I’m on the road.

  4. Asking the Right Questions About Use Case: a mnml Digest (via mnmlscholar). I promise I’m not including this link because it includes one of my posts, but rather because it has several other articles about how to consider the use case for those products in your collection, or more importantly, those you are considering adding to your collection.

  5. Monteverde Sweet Life Ink Set (via Dapprman). The Monteverde “Sweet Life” inks received great reviews when they were introduced a few years ago. Apparently there was a contamination issue that I was unaware of but which Dapprman notes here.

  6. Post-DC Post-Covid Recap (via Penquisition). Evan has his slightly (and unfortunately) delayed D.C. Pen Show recap, which as always is well-written and thoughtful.

  7. Composition Book Round Up Back to School Sale at Target, Walmart, and Dollar Tree (via Comfortable Shoes Studio). Leslie has the annual composition book round-up ready to go! It’s actually three posts at three different stores, and as usual you can find some low-cost gems out there.

  8. PenBBS 456 Fountain Pen Review (via Pen Addict). PenBBS’s vacuum filler model remains a reasonably priced favorite after all these years. I’m glad to see that PenBBS has been able to resume shipping.

  9. Colorverse Butterfly Nebula and NGC 6302 (via Well-Appointed Desk). I’ve seen this ink in person and it is indeed beautiful. While it was introduced at the D.C. Pen Show, it’s now generally available.

  10. Opus Cineris Harmonic Nib Series A Cursive Italic Hand Engraved Nib by Anabelle Sophie Hiller (via Gourmet Pens). I was disappointed that I didn’t get the opportunity to break away from the table and test out one of Anabelle’s nibs in D.C. Azizah has a video up!

In Case You Missed It….

In advance of the 2022 San Francisco Pen Show - a show that’s been quite planner and paper focused, at least this year, I posted a short piece on my five favorite planner pens. I also published a recap of the San Francisco Pen Show, Day One, which is only the first day of my adventures on the West Coast! Stay tuned for more SF recap content this week.

This Week in the Curated Shop

Right before I left (as in, five minutes before I departed for the airport), I received notice that my shipment of TWSBI Glow Green fountain pens had arrived, and they will begin shipping immediately upon my return from San Francisco. I’ve also restocked on numerous favorites, including the full range of Midori MD paper and Traveler’s Notebooks, in addition to many of the other TWSBI models in all nib sizes.

Hoping to recapture that old-school pen show magic this week!

Sunday Reading for August 21, 2022

August 21, 2022
  1. Reflections on My Second D.C. Pen Show (mnmlscholar, guest post). There will be a few more D.C. Pen Show recaps trickling in this week. It’s a big show and takes time to process everything that you saw!

  2. 2022 DC Pen Show, Part 6 (via Rachel’s Reflections). Rachel has an update on the status of Noodler’s Ink, as announced in D.C.

  3. DC Pen Show 2022 Chat (via Gourmet Pens). I missed Azizah in DC, but be sure to check out her video recap!

  4. Lamy NYC - A Quick Visit (via Pen Addict - Kimberly). Even though I rarely purchase anything, I enjoy visiting the Lamy store whenever I’m in the area.

  5. Gravitas Sentry Fountain Pen (via The Pencilcase Blog). Dries reviews the Sentry, a more substantial version of the Gravitas “Entry”. After handling at the D.C. Pen Show myself, I can say that I prefer the larger Sentry.

  6. Paper Mind Cosmo Air Light Hardcover Notebook Review (via Blake’s Broadcast). I love seeing what The Paper Mind has done in terms of making some of these more uncommon (and typically expensive) Japanese papers more readily accessible. I also enjoy seeing more hardcover notebooks.

  7. Surprise: Diamine Blue Black (via A Fleeting Ripple). Sometimes the most basic inks in our collection surprise us and become our favorites.

  8. Kickstarted: BigiDesign Dual Side Click Pen (via The Poor Penman). BigiDesign is at it again, with another refill-friendly EDC pen. Be sure to check this one out, as they are endlessly tinkering and refining the concept.

  9. ScriBo Write Here (via Dapprman). Personally, I think the design of this ScriBo store exclusive (and the first ScriBo pen in general) needs to be resurrected.

  10. J. Herbin 1670 Shogun (via Mountain of Ink). I don’t usually go for the J. Herbin 1670 series as they’re a bit outside of my typical use case, but I’m a sucker for grey-browns.

In Case You Missed It…

This week on the blog, I took at look at the recent trend of Titanium Nitride-plated “Iris” or “Rainbow” finish pens that have become so popular lately, as applied to several different models. I also reviewed the Galen Leather “Magnum Opus” case, in two different versions (zippered and non-zippered).

This Week in the Curated Shop

I will be headed to the San Francisco Pen Show on Thursday, so if you have your eye on something in the shop and would like it to ship before then, please get your orders in by Wednesday morning. I won’t have a table at the show, but I will be there through the weekend (Thursday night, leaving Monday), and will have some fun stuff with me, perhaps including a redux of the show exclusive cards and coupons. This week, we featured restocks of the brass pencil sharpeners and replacement blades from M+R, as well as a lot of pencils and pencil accessories (including Swiss Wood 10-packs, several of which I found and had not entered into inventory). We still have plenty of the latest releases from TWSBI, Caran d’Ache, and Platinum, links below.
