My Personal Approach to Vintage Fountain Pens

My acquisitions at this year’s pen shows have leaned decidedly more vintage-heavy. There are a few factors playing into this. First, for the most part I’ve been uninspired by many of the modern releases from mainstream pen companies - not necessarily because the pens are bad, but simply because we’ve reached a point where innovation has plateaued. Thus, in addition to focusing on those smaller makers who continue to experiment, I’ve started looking backwards to an aspect of the hobby that I’ve dabbled in yet haven’t fully embraced: the vintage world.

Second, given the amount of time that I now devote to writing about and retailing stationery, I need to carve out some aspect of this hobby that’s pure fun for me. I plan to attend the Ohio Pen Show in a couple weeks, which is one of the premier vintage shows in the country, and is actually the first pen show I attended way back in 2012. In advance of this trip I thought it might be fun to not only show off some of my newer vintage acquisitions, but also provide some insight into how I approach vintage pens in general.

My Recommendations For Enjoying Vintage Pens

Don’t Worry About Locating “Mint” Pens or Valuable Collectibles. Nearly all of the vintage pens I own would be deemed “user grade” by a serious collector. I’m totally fine with that. A 75+ year-old pen that’s served as a functional writing instrument for nearly a century should have some dings, scratches, and signs of use. Not only do they make me less reluctant to use a pen for fear of damaging it, these marks add character. In certain vintage watch circles, it’s considered a faux pas to overly restore and polish a vintage watch to where it looks like new, and I take the same approach to my pens. (User-grade specimens of common vintage pens like Sheaffer Snorkels and Parker 51s are also much easier on the wallet than new-old-stock or “mint” condition versions, and you can get them at extremely low prices if you purchase unrestored examples.)
Learn How to Restore Pens Yourself. To get seriously into vintage pens - and arguably, to have the most fun with them - it helps to learn a bit of basic pen repair. Most vintage pens use some variation of a sac-based filling system, which may need to be serviced periodically. Learning how to restore your own pens not only saves you money (and the inconvenience of having to ship off pens to get fixed), but in the course of doing your own work, you also learn how pens are made, the intricacies of vintage filling systems, and how they differ from the modern filling systems we use today. Repairs can range from simple and straightforward (lever filling pens like Esterbrooks) to time consuming and more complex (such as a Sheaffer Snorkel, some of which you can see in the stories on my Instagram profile). Many vintage pens are incredibly durable, including the Parker 51, 51 Special, and Super 21, and often require no restoration beyond a flush with water or bath in an ultrasonic cleaner to remove dried ink.
Swap Vintage Nibs into Modern Pens. While I would strongly advise against purchasing your first vintage pens on eBay or Etsy (unless you absolutely know the seller is reputable), it’s sometimes fun to buy a big lot of unrestored vintage fountain pens sold “as-is” or “for parts”. Usually you can get one or two salvageable fountain pens out of these lots, and the rest you can scavenge for spare parts for other restorations or - my favorite - for nibs and Frankenpens! Many vintage pens, even inexpensive ones, featured 14k gold nibs, some of which are compatible with the feeds and sections used today. You will need to experiment, and it will most certainly void your warranty, but this is a great way to add a luxurious gold-nib writing experience to a less expensive modern pen like a Kaweco Sport. As shown in the picture below, I swapped a Mabie-Todd No. 2 gold nib directly into a modern Kaweco Sport nib unit, so now my Olive Kaweco Collection pen has a 14k gold nib.
Don’t Baby Your Pens - Write with Them! As you can probably tell, I am not a traditional vintage pen collector. I purchase pens both to use them and to help me learn more about the history of writing instruments in general. Because I acquire user-grade pens and have a basic knowledge of restoration and repair, I’m much less hesitant to use my vintage writing instruments and carry them with me semi-regularly. (Most don’t handle airplane travel well, however. Fly with them un-inked.)
Learn About Your Pens. My interest in history, antiques, and “old” technology is what led me to the pen hobby in the first place, so it’s a bit ironic (and inexcusable) that I’ve let this part of the hobby slide. One thing I’ve started doing recently is keeping a “pen journal” about pens I’ve acquired - vintage and modern. For the vintage pens, I note the make, model, and approximate date of manufacture, as well was where I acquired it and how it was restored. I’ll also make notes about why I acquired each pen, what I know about its history, and why I found it interesting enough to add to my “collection.” I’m also considering adding photographs, keeping both a digital archive and a printed copy using my Fuji Instax or similar printer.

Stationery as a Inexpensive Way to Relive Your Childhood and The Blackfeet Indian Pencil: My Favorite Pencil of All-Time

All this recent hubbub over the return of Dunkaroos has me in a bit of a nostalgic mood. Not necessarily because of Dunkaroos - I was a bit too old for that fad -but it did get me thinking about things from childhood and why we collect and get fixated on certain items. Take stationery. I’d venture that if you ask yourself why you’re stationery obsessed (and if you’re reading this blog, “stationery obsessed” is an accurate description), two things come up: (1) You’ve always been this way, going to back to when you were a kid; and (2) as you’ve grown, you have, at times, found yourself thinking back to certain pens/pencils/notebooks that you remember fondly and wondering whatever happened to them. For me, this resulted in a six-month eBay quest to accumulate a full gross of my favorite school pencil, the Blackfeet Indian Pencil. While reason eventually took hold and I managed to stop myself after buying up six dozen, I don’t regret this little adventure at all.

Background on the Blackfeet Indian Pencil

Those of us who grew up in the 1980s and 1990s probably may remember the Blackfeet Indian Pencil for its promotional gift set, featuring a dozen pencils in a cedar box stamped with a Remington-esque logo. The pencils were made by the Blackfeet Indian Writing Company, founded in 1972 and located on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation in Browning, Montana. Until its closure in the late 1990s, the Blackfeet Indian Writing Company manufactured writing pencils, art pencils, pens (which I’ve never seen but are also available on eBay). Apparently the company passed from tribal control into private hands around 1992, and subsequently went out of business not too long after.

I received a dozen of these pencils, in the commemorative box, for Christmas one year when I was 12 or 13, which must have placed the timing towards the end of the company’s run. I remember seeing these for sale at The Nature Company and museum gift shops, which I assume is where my parents (probably my Dad) picked these up. I mostly used yellow No. 2 pencils (Faber-Castell Americans) throughout my school years, so the fact that these are natural pencils probably made them stand out in my mind as something different. I loved the fact that they wrote darker than the Faber-Castell American, which has a firmer core, yet lasted a long time. I had a few of these pencils left well into college, so I probably picked up a few dozen more along the way after that initial batch.

I’m not the only to stockpile this pencil. I didn’t know this when I set out on my journey to track it down, but apparently the Blackfeet Indian Pencil has developed its own cult following over the years. For example, the composer John Luther Adams disclosed in a Facebook post a couple of years ago that he uses Blackfeet Indian Pencils to compose, and Ticonderogas for general writing. The “Blackfeet craze” isn’t quite as pronounced as the hype surrounding the original Blackwing, but eBay pricing has steadily risen. Good thing I have 6 dozen.

In terms of lacquered finish, the closest match is the USA-made Ticonderoga Natural on the left. Yes, I have a mini-stash of those too. No, they’re not for sale, and if you make me a trade offer, it had better be good.

So What’s the Verdict, and Where Do I Get This Pencil?

Is the Blackfeet Indian Pencil as good as I remember it? Yes, it is. While certainly not a luxury pencil on par with a Blackwing or a Palomino, this pencil holds its own with its contemporaries (the Ticonderoga Natural) as well as modern equivalents like the General’s Cedar Pointe and Musgrave’s new “Tennessee Red” (discussed further below). Honestly, unless you have a nostalgic connection to this pencil or are a collector who wants to own a piece of history, you can find similar pencils for MUCH less money, and at around $20-30 per dozen (what I’d consider the reasonable eBay rate for Blackfeet Indian Pencils) the Blackwing Natural probably gives you better performance and feel at that price point. In my case, however, I have no regrets due to the personal connection. I’m glad I’ll have a stash of these pencils for a long time to come.

If you’d like to source a box of Blackfeet Indian Pencils for your own collection, you’re probably reduced to scouring flea markets, garage sales, and eBay. At any given time, there are multiple eBay listings for Blackfeet Pencils. While some sellers are asking $60-100 for a set of pencils in the cedar box, it’s still relatively easy to find loose pencils and even full packs for $20-30 if you’re patient, which can be less than the cost of a Blackwing Volumes edition, so we’re not talking vintage Blackwing money or anything close.

If you’d like a set of beautiful cedar pencils in a commemorative box, and don’t want to pay out the nose on eBay, I’d suggest that you opt for a set of two dozen Musgrave “Tennessee Reds.”

Alternatives to the Blackfeet Indian Pencil

General’s Cedar Pointe No. 2 is the closest match. While the Blackfeet Indian Pencil is coated in a clear lacquer and General leaves the Cedar Pointe unfinished, the pencil offers a similar aesthetic (natural pencil, black ferrule) and the cores are so close on the two (at least the two specific pencils I’m using) that it makes me wonder whether the Blackfeet Writing Company might have sourced them from General.

For a natural pencil with a lacquered finish, you can of course try the Blackwing Natural, which has a softer core despite containing Blackwing’s “firm” graphite, and also the new Musgrave “Tennessee Red,” which has its own lacquered cedar aesthetic, made even more interesting by the fact that Musgrave is now using actual red cedar - a pencil-making material common more than a hundred years ago - as opposed to the incense cedar commonly used to make modern pencils. I just purchased a box of these in their own commemorative cedar packaging and they’re gorgeous.

Pen Review: Aurora Vintage Duo-cart Fountain Pen

In 2017, Aurora teased a reissue of their vintage Duo-cart fountain pen, only to withdraw it from the market in order to fix some minor design flaws. While I owned one of the 2017 Duo-carts, and enjoy the pen, I held off on publishing a formal review until Aurora could perfect the design, namely the friction-fit cap which had a tendency to come loose on the original iteration of the pen. After what turned out to be a bit of a wait, Aurora re-released the Duo-cart this year as part of their “Archivi Storici” lineup, which is the name the company gives to modern versions of vintage pens reissued from the Aurora archives. The result? This one’s a hit and merits the attention of those who desire vintage style without the fuss of writing with an actual vintage pen.

What do I like about the Duo-cart? It’s a well-built modern workhorse with vintage looks. This combination of style and comfort nearly always lands a positive review here at TGS.

A Hooded Nib. Anytime a pen company releases a pen with a hooded nib, it catches my attention immediately. The Duo-cart’s stainless steel nib is stiff and has a touch of Aurora’s signature tooth, which makes for a tactile writing experience, without being scratchy. (It’s hard to describe, but those who have written with an Aurora pen know what I’m talking about - almost like writing with a pencil.) I would characterize the nib as a moderately wet “Western medium,” though that will vary somewhat depending on what ink you use.
True Vintage Styling. In addition to the hooded nib, the Duo-cart features several other vintage-inspired design touches, drawn directly from the Aurora archives. My personal favorites include the “linear guilloche” cap, and the classic “Aurora Made in Italy” script around the base.
Good Balance and All-Day Writing Comfort. What I enjoy most about the Duo-cart (as well as other vintage and vintage-inspired pens) is the fact that the pen was designed in an era when fountain pens were intended to be used as a daily writing tool akin to your keyboard. Therefore, comfort is key. The section is long and provides ample room to grip the pen, and since the Duo-cart uses a friction fit cap there are no sharp threads to interfere with your grip or dig into your hand. The pen is similar in size to the Lamy 2000 or the Parker 51.

Cons: You can have your nib in any size you want, as long as it’s medium.

There isn’t much that I dislike about the Duo-cart, but those considering a purchase should note a couple of things:

Posting. The main issue that I still have with this pen, even after the reissue, is that the cap sometimes fails to post securely. On a couple of occasions, I’ve had the posted cap go flying across my desk at work when I turned around or moved my arm suddenly. Not an issue for those who don’t post their pens, but it can be a bit of a problem for me unless I remember to jam the cap down pretty hard on the back of the barrel.
Nib Size. What’s the cliche? You can have it in any size you want, as long as you like medium? I imagine this choice had to do with the scale and cost of production on the hooded nib, which is specific to this pen, so Aurora went with its most popular nib option. My two Duo-carts are somewhat wet writers, so those looking for a fine or extra-fine line will probably need to invest in a nib grind.

Takeaways and Where to Buy

The Duo-cart is my first foray into Aurora’s “Archivi Storici” editions, and given how much I’ve enjoyed this pen I look forward to more of these releases in the future. (I also plan to dig around on eBay and see if I can unearth some of the previous Archivi Storici editions, which include a re-release of the vintage-style Aurora 88.) I support pen companies reissuing modern versions of their vintage pen designs, since it caters to those of us who appreciate the classic fountain pen styles, yet don’t necessarily want to deal with using a higher-maintenance vintage pen on a daily basis.

You can purchase the Aurora Duo-cart at most Aurora retailers, including our site sponsor Pen Chalet. Aurora has set MSRP at $195 for this pen, with most retailers pricing it around $156. I don’t have any issues with this price point. The Duo-cart looks high-end, the pen is well-made, and you have to account for the time and expense of resurrecting a vintage pen from the archives that’s been out of production for years. The $150-200 price bracket is competitive, however, and Aurora is going nose-to-nose with other excellent steel-nib pens such as the Esterbrook Estie, the Leonardo Momento Zero, and the Pelikan M205. The Duo-cart’s hooded nib distinguishes it from these pens, but for around $20 more you can purchase the Lamy 2000, which also features a hooded nib, but in 14k gold with a piston filler. The design aesthetic is distinct enough, however, that the Duo-cart will likely carve out its own niche.

When I'm on vacation (or an extended work trip), I'll typically prep at least one short post linking to some past content that still has relevance, and that newer readers of the blog might not have had the opportunity to enjoy the first time around. This week, I'll take a look back at my "Vintage Pen Primer" series, which offers my thoughts on the ins and outs of vintage pens.

I've been thinking a lot about getting back into vintage to some degree, now that pen show season is in full swing, and the 2017 D.C. Pen Show is on the horizon. I'd like to find a "focus" for collecting, though, and not revert to the "little bit of everything" style I had assumed the last time I dabbled in vintage. Vacs, maybe?

Pen Review: Waterman Man 100 Patrician, a Neglected Workhorse

I have a soft spot in my heart for modern Waterman fountain pens, even though their line has become a bit stale since they were acquired by Newell-Rubbermaid in 2001, with fewer models introduced into the lineup. To me, the pens that Waterman manufactured during the 1980s and the 1990s are excellent--I think of them as "vintage" in the sense that they aren't available anymore, but "modern" in that they use contemporary Waterman cartridges and converters. The term I use to describe pens like these is "near modern," and they are a fixture in my collection.

History of Waterman Pens

The name "Waterman" has a storied history in the fountain pen world, with the lore (repeated on the Company website) being that Lewis Edson Waterman invented the modern fountain pen. Others have recently cast doubt on this version of history, but the story still sticks. However, what many people don't know that the modern Waterman Pen Company is not the same company that made many of the classic Waterman pens from the 1930s and 1940s, but rather is a descendant of Jif-Waterman, the French subsidiary, which is now owned by Newell-Rubbermaid. Waterman has an interesting timeline on their website that shows various events from the history of the French and American companies, including all the major pen models introduced over the years. Of all these designs, the classic "Le Man 100" (known simply as the "Man 100" stateside), first introduced in 1982 for the company's 100th anniversary, is my favorite.

Design and Build

The Waterman Man 100, at first glance, resembles a larger version of the Laureate and other more modern Waterman pens. It is solidly built using the typical Waterman lacquer-over-brass construction that gives the pen some weight. The style is classic Waterman, with the traditional "Waterman clip" the French company has used since the 1960s and the large 18k "Ideal" nib (borrowed, of course, from the early days of the Waterman "Ideal" fountain pen). The Man 100 was introduced in 1982 and intended to serve as Waterman's flagship luxury pen, competing with Montblanc and Pelikan. What makes this particular version unique, however, is the cap band.

The band on this version of the Man 100 is modeled after the Waterman Patrician fountain pen from the 1920s and 1930s. Waterman manufactured these "Patrician" Man 100s as special editions from 1992 to 1994. If you shop around, they are starting to command what I consider to be extremely high prices. I'm glad I bought when I did: I love my two Man 100 Patricians, but I'm not sure that I'd be willing to pay what people are asking these days. One thing I will say--if you can find these new-old-stock, the packaging on these older pens is gorgeous. It comes with a nice wooden box. The faux-leather on the inside is a bit worn, but hey, it's almost 25 years old.

The Nib

Now for the writing experience: Waterman nibs are on the stiff side. The stainless and gold-plated nibs are definitely nails, but the 18k gold nibs have the tiniest bit of spring to them--just enough to keep the writing interesting. I have two of these pens: a coral ("Cardinal Red") and a green. Both of my pens have fine nibs and wrote adequately out of the box. My coral pen was N.O.S., so the fine nib wrote like a dream. My green pen was used, and the nib was slightly worn in (to someone else's writing style), so I had Mike Masuyama tweak it. No big deal. Both are now very nice daily workhorses.
