New Arrivals: Ballpoints and Multi Pens to Kickstart Your New Year's Productivity

January 21, 2025

I had a bit of a surprise Monday morning, when an unexpected delivery from Japan arrived. (Somehow I must’ve missed the shipment notification.) Included in this first big delivery of the New Year was a restock of the excellent Uni Jetstream 4+1 Multi Pens in three colors, Sage, Blue Grey, and the new “Beige”, as well as the orange and blue Karimoku collaboration finishes.

Fans of muted earth-tones like beige and sage will love the Uni Jetstream 4+1 “Bamboo” series.

We also received more of the exceptionally good Pilot S20 ballpoints, which I’ve enjoyed so much I’m working up a “Workhorse Pen” post highlighting what I consider one of the best low-viscosity ballpoints out there. Featuring Pilot’s “Acro-ink” in a Dr. Grip-style refill, this .7mm ballpoint writes a smooth, dark line, and features a contoured wood barrel that will appeal to many pencil fans as well as ballpoint enthusiasts. Finally, we’ve received the ballpoint version of the Mini 5-friendly Pilot Birdie, so you can complete the trifecta set (pictured at top).

I’m trying very hard to get the matching mechanical pencils, which apparently can be difficult to source.

Come visit us in person! Public hours are Thursday and Friday from 1-6pm, Saturday from 10-6pm, and otherwise by appointment. We look forward to seeing you this week!

Thursday Drops: Pilot Dip Pens, Midori MD, Caran d'Ache Fixpencils and More!

January 9, 2025

As we await anywhere from 6-10” of snow in the Nashville area, it’s a great time to be inside enjoying your stationery! We have a few new arrivals this week, ranging from the Pilot Iro-Utsushi Dip Pens, to a fresh restock of Midori, to Caran d’Ache Fixpencils and more! It’s the perfect weekend to get some journaling in. Don’t forget to check out our Gently Used and Clearance, where we have some individual Inkvent samples and other products we’re clearing out at year-end.

Please note that due to the impending inclement weather, our brick and mortar store will likely be closed Friday and Saturday. Keep an eye on this page as well as our Instagram account for updates. Orders will continue to be packed and shipped, though please do not worry if you don’t see “movement” for a few days, as USPS and UPS will likely be delayed. Stay safe out there!

  1. Pilot Iro-Utsushi Dip Pens. These simple dip pens from Pilot have garnered rave reviews, mainly due to their excellent performance at a very low price point. The woodgrain versions have a larger diameter and feature a facet to prevent the pen from rolling off the desk.

  2. Caran d’Ache Fixpencils. Both the standard matte black Fixpencil and the Fixpencil 884 (color versions) are back in stock! In addition, we have a few remaining “Creative Nomad” lettering sets, featuring brush pens and fineliners in addition to a limited edition Fixpencil.

  3. Viarco Pencils. From one of the last operating European pencil factories, we are happy to offer these Portuguese woodcase pencils in six different vintage inspired designs, as well as a gift set where you can purchase a dozen of each style.

  4. Midori MD and MD Light Notebook Restock. Midori MD and MD Light notebooks are a favorite, not least because they fit many different standard A5 notebook covers and notebook systems.

  5. Midori MD Thick Paper. A thicker version of MD Paper, for those who really like to layer on the ink or use their journals for multimedia projects. We have both the A5 and Square versions in stock.

  6. Stalogy 1/2 Year and 365-Day Planners. For those looking for a flexible undated planner (or a very functional notebook) with thinner paper, Stàlogy should be on your list of things to consider. We also have the Stàlogy heavy-duty stitched paper covers in stock, which are sized to fit both styles of notebooks.

  7. Midori Notebook Tabs. We found a large stash of these Midori Notebook Tabs and Dividers that had fallen out of the online inventory. These are exceptionally useful for those who want to create their own planners and organizers using standard undated notebooks.

  8. Tom’s Studio Lumos Refillable Fineliner Pens. Before the New Year, we received a restock of the Lumos Pro Duo and Lumos Pro fineliners in most colors.

  9. Tom’s Studio Wren Refillable Fineliner. The compact, pocketable Wren was a surprise success last year! The matte blue (“Midnight”) and matte black colors are hard to keep in stock. We also have a restock of the Midnight Blue Fibre-Tip Ink, specially formulated for the Wren and Lumos Pens. Standard fountain pen ink works just fine, in my experience, but this stuff is excellent and I love the color.

  10. Tom’s Studio Pocket Fountain Pens and Architect Nibs. During this same restock, we added pens that ship with the architect nib pre-installed, though you can also order the Architect Nib separately.

New Arrivals: Pilot Iro-Utsushi Dip Pens

January 7, 2025

By customer request, Pilot Iro-Utsushi dip pens have arrived! These relatively inexpensive dip pens feature a simple holder and a fountain pen nib in either fine or medium, and have become a favorite of enthusiasts looking for a simple way to write from an ink bottle or to sample fountain pen inks. Not as delicate as a glass pen, and not as temperamental as some calligraphy dip nibs, Pilot designed the Iro-Utsushi line for simplicity. Pens are available in five different colors: Black Wood, Natural Wood Grain, and Clear, Clear Blue, and Clear Black Acrylic.

The pens do not have a cap, but Pilot does include a reusable rubber sleeve in the box that you can use to protect your nib during travel.

The Pilot Iro-Utsushi dip pens are priced as low as $8 for the resin models and only $20 for the wood grain versions, the latter of which have a facet on one side to serve as a roll stop. Available now!

Our brick and mortar shop is open for regular hours Thursday through Saturday, and otherwise by appointment. For directions and specific hours keep an eye on this page, which will also reflect any changes each week due to inclement weather, travel, etc.

Year-End Recap: Top 10 T.G.S. Curated Shop Products from 2024

January 3, 2025

I’m foregoing the weekly “Drops” post in favor of closing out the 2024 year-end recaps with a bit of a shop update! Last year was quite eventful - in addition to opening our brick-and-mortar location, we expanded our range of online offerings, and as we take year-end inventory it’s always fascinating to see what was popular (or not) during the prior year. Stationery can be a trend-driven industry - while there are always constants such as Pilot and Lamy, what sells one year might not be in demand the next, and something that sat on the shelf for six months in 2024 might all of a sudden get hot in 2025 as more people discover it. Based on this past year’s stats, here are the past year’s “Top Ten” (in no particular order, but rather loosely organized by product categories):

  1. Tom’s Studio Lumos Pro Duo Refillable Fineliner. We’ve been carrying the Tom’s Studio Lumos fineliners for less than a year and they’ve shot to the top of our favorite products. The Lumos Pro Duo, which allows you to ink two tips at a time and ships with a set of 11 different tip options, is the best seller. Read more about why we like them here.

  2. Lamy 2000 (All Iterations). My personal workhorse pen and the least surprising entry on this list. Even if you’re not a fountain pen person, the ballpoint, rollerball, multi pen, and mechanical pencil options are all excellent.

  3. Roterfaden Taschenbegleiter. For those who like to rotate through different notebooks and not be wedded to a specific refill, the Roterfaden Taschenbegleiter is a superb choice for a flexible planner/notebook cover. The recycled leather versions (LB23) are the most popular, in sizes A6 through A4.

  4. Lochby Field Journal and Field Journal A5 Notebooks. Lochby saw a resurgence in popularity towards the end of the year, for those who like the versatility of the Roterfaden but may prefer a more rugged and/or non-leather build. The slim A5 notebooks feature 68gsm Tomoe River Paper in five different rulings, including two different types of lined rulings, dot, and even a planner layout.

  5. NJK Long-Point Pencil Sharpener. The highest-volume seller in our entire store, these inexpensive long-point pencil sharpeners punch far above their weight class in terms of quality. Silver is currently the only color that remains in stock, but we still have a bunch and will look to restock later in the year.

  6. Nakabayashi Yu-Sari Paper. Designed by Nakabayashi specifically for optimal fountain pen performance, the Yu-Sari paper is available in both notebook and looseleaf formats. I’ve found it to have a soft feel, and it handles ink beautifully.

  7. Clairefontaine Looseleaf Paper. Though the single-sheet A4 is sold out (and will be reordered eventually), we have plenty of A5 sheets and A4 “double booklet” French-ruled looseleaf paper. The latter is a cool format that I discovered when I attended school in France many years ago, and are used by students for compositions, notetaking, and more.

  8. Hightide Folding Metal Bookstands. One of our original products remains a best seller! These bookstands (which can also hold notepads, tablets, and more) are a fixture on my desk and in my travel bag.

  9. Anterique Ballpoint Pens. We are happy to offer these excellent hybrid ballpoints in dozens of colors, in either the classic acrylic version or the upscale brass. Mini pocket pens are now available.

  10. Pilot Iroshizuku Ink. What I remember as a “new release” from Pilot more than a decade ago has now become a stationery classic. Pilot continues to release new colors every couple of years, with the most recent versions

Our brick and mortar shop is open for regular hours Thursday through Saturday, and otherwise by appointment. For directions and specific hours, keep an eye on this page, which will also reflect any changes each week due to travel, etc. Also, our New Year’s Planner and Notebook System Promotion continues through tonight, so don’t miss out if you’re looking to try something new for 2025!

Happy New Years! Take 10% Off Select Planners to Kick-Off 2025!

January 1, 2025

I look forward to January 1 because it’s the day I officially roll over all of my notebooks and planners to the next year. While I plan to post my official lineup on Saturday (I’m still tweaking a few things), I thought I would kick off the New Year - and inventory week - by running a small promotion in the shop. Take 10% off Planners and Notebook Systems (excluding Roterfaden) with the coupon code “HAPPYNEWYEAR” at checkout. The promotion will run through Friday, January 3. Also, a reminder that our clearance sale continues, with all products marked as clearance subject to an additional automatic 15% markdown at checkout.

We are closed today for the holiday, but the in-person shop will reopen tomorrow (Thursday) for normal hours. Many thanks for all your support!
