Review Revisited: The Penwell Classic Five Years Later

October 27, 2022

It’s been five years since Penwell Co. (since renamed Good Made Better as they’ve expanded their range of goods) introduced the Penwell, a thoughtfully engineered desktop pen stand designed to allow you to enjoy the “desk pen” experience with any fountain pen or other capped writing instrument. I’ve received a few questions over the past two weeks regarding how exactly the Penwell works and how I use it, so I thought it might be fun to do a “review revisited” post.

I have two Classic Penwells: one in the brass finish, and one in our exclusive “Aged Red”.

The beauty of the Penwell is that it’s such a simple product. It consists of three parts: (1) the base, available in a variety of materials and finishes; (2) a foam insert, which secures the pen cap, and (3) a microsuction pad that adheres to your desk or other surface. The Penwell’s base does not use any sort of adhesive, but rather thousands of tiny microscopic suction cups. I have two different Penwells that I’ve used for years, and despite moving them around multiple times, I’ve never had the microsuction pad damage the finish on any surface, nor has it lost any of its stickiness. If you find the Penwell coming loose or sliding around, all you typically need to do is wipe the microsuction surface with a damp cloth and you’re good to go.

The foam insert is flexible enough to accommodate pens of varying sizes. While I’ve been able to use nearly all pens with the standard foam insert (which ships with our Aged Red Model), if you have an especially large pen you can purchase a thinner XL foam sleeve for $5 directly from Good Made Better.

As I noted in my original review, I love that the Penwell gives me the ability to “park” my pen cap-down while I’m working, especially with larger pens that don’t post. One reason that I post my pens is that I get (justifiably) nervous about the cap getting knocked off the desk onto the floor, and my strategically placed Penwells give me peace of mind. The Penwell base holds the cap securely, so you can uncap your pen one-handed and easily recap when you’re finished writing, as you would with a traditional desk pen. Currently, I have one Penwell stationed on my main desk in my home office, and another on each standing desk, at home and in my office downtown.

The Penwell microsuction base on a two year-old Penwell. For a demonstration of how to use the pen holder, check out this Instagram video.

I’ve always loved the idea of a dedicated desk pen, especially some of the more lovely vintage sets, but the bases tend to have a large footprint and the pens themselves aren’t especially versatile, featuring long tapers and low ink capacity. With the Penwell, you can use your pen of choice in “desk pen mode”, and then pull it out to take it with you when you move away from your desk. That said, I sometimes use my larger Opus 88 eyedroppers, such as the classic “Demonstrator” pens, as semi-permanent desk pens when they’re inked. They hold so much ink that if I’m on a busy streak at work and don’t want to worry about refilling, I can park them in the Penwell and keep a fountain pen at the ready, which is convenient for those days when I accidentally leave my pen case at home. Below I’ve included pictures of the Penwell with fountain pens in different sizes, to showcase the versatility.

Takeaways and Where to Buy

Years later, the Penwell is still one of my most-used desk accessories, which is notable because I tend to cycle through things and “redecorate” my workspace often. There are very few constants on my desktop. I expect the appreciation for this product is widespread, given that Good Made Better has expanded over the years and become a fixture at pen shows.

Here, I liked the Penwell so much that it was my first choice for a product collaboration back in 2020 when I launched the T.G.S. Curated Shop. In addition to our own special-edition Penwell in the T.G.S.-exclusive “Aged Red” finish, you can purchase other Penwells directly from the Good Made Better website, along with a range of other desk accessories designed to make your work more enjoyable, including the recently released “Bookfellow” book weight. The Penwell Classic (which remains my preferred model) comes in a variety of different finishes, though you may also want to check out the larger Penwell Craftsman and the portable Penwell Traveller.

The T.G.S. Curated Shop is an authorized retailer of certain Penwell products. This post does not contain paid third-party affiliate links. T.G.S. is supported entirely by purchases through the T.G.S. Curated Shop and the T.G.S. Patreon Program.

The Opus 88 Minty comes in two colors, light blue (a teal) and orange (a pale coral).

New in the Shop: Welcome Opus 88!

October 25, 2022

When you’re looking for a quality pen with a large ink capacity, workhorse durability, and comfortable, vintage-inspired design, it’s hard to go wrong with Opus 88. Made in Taiwan, Opus 88 first become known for their colorful demonstrator fountain pens, and have in recent years expanded into a broader range of materials and designs. What has remained consistent is the brand’s excellent Japanese-style eyedropper filling system. Each fountain pen ships with a glass dropper to allow you to fill the barrel directly with ink, yet the pen itself also features a valve system that you can open and close to manage ink flow - open it for longer writing sessions where you want ink to flow freely; close it when traveling with the pen (especially on an airplane) to prevent leaks. I’ve written a lot about Opus 88 fountain pens over the years, and you can read the “Workhorse Pen” overview here.

The Opus 88 Jazz Demonstrator

We currently offer two different models of Opus 88 fountain pens: the “Minty”, which is a streamlined flat top fountain pen in vintage-style flecked acrylic, and the translucent cigar-shaped “Jazz” demonstrator, a personal favorite of mine. Both pens are priced at $125 and $120, respectively, and feature reliable No. 6 JoWo nibs. As a preview of our upcoming Fountain Pen Day promotions, starting today all purchases of any fountain pen from the T.G.S. Curated Shop will ship with a free ink sample, so you can get your Opus 88 eyedropper writing immediately!

The Gentleman Stationer is supported by purchases from the T.G.S. Curated Shop and pledges via the T.G.S. Patreon Program. All domestic U.S. orders over $75 ship free. Many thanks for your support!

Clockwise from top left: Caran d’Ache “Colour Treasure” Postcards; T.G.S. x Penwell Exclusive in “Aged Red”; iLootPaperie “Snail Mail Bonanza” washi tape; and the TWSBI ECO “Glow Green”. (“Other” washi tapes cannot be pictured, as this is a family friendly site. Mostly.) ;)

Thursday Drops: Caran d'Ache Restock, Washi Tapes, Penwells, and More!

October 20, 2022

Well, I’ll kick off this Thursday’s “Drop” announcement with the news that everyone’s been waiting for: Grown-up Washi Tape is back in stock, as are many of the other patterns in our Washi Tape and Pins section! If the past is any predictor, the “fun” Washi Tape will be gone by sundown. :) The next round of T.G.S. Special Edition Penwells will arrive and start shipping on Saturday, so if you’d like to reserve one of these from a relatively small batch, pre-orders are available. To read more on what went into designing our first exclusive product, check out this post.

As noted below, we recently received a restock of many of our core Caran d’Ache products, including the 849 Rollerball and the woodcase pencils. Finally, don’t miss out on the most recent TWSBI releases, especially if you’d like to pair a Glow Green with the upcoming Glow Purple! Happy Shopping!

The T.G.S. Curated Shop is an authorized retailer of all brand sold, and T.G.S. is entirely supported by shop sales and pledges via the T.G.S. Patreon Program, which comes with early access to Gently Used sales, meetups, and more.

  1. Caran d’Ache 849 Rollerball. We recently received fresh stock of the Caran d’Ache 849 Rollerball Pen, including additional pens in the matte grey, white, and black finishes. We also received more of the excellent CdA Rollerball refills in both black and blue ink, which are Parker-style cartridges that fit many different pens. You can read the full writeup on the Caran d’Ache 849 Rollerball here.

  2. Caran d’Ache 849 Standard Ballpoint. We also have a full restock of the standard 849 ballpoint pens in most colors, including the popular sapphire, dark blue, and my personal favorite, matte anthracite grey. Matching mechanical pencils are also available.

  3. Caran d’Ache 2022 Limited Edition Dark Violet and Pastel Yellow 849 Ballpoints. The Dark Violet pens sold out extremely fast, so we ordered more and they recently arrived. The Pastel Yellow, however, is a sleeper. The colors are designed to complement one another so why not make yourself a set?

  4. Caran d’Ache Claim Your Style Edition No. 4. What’s your favorite of this year’s Claim Your Style pen? The two blue options are outstanding - especially the Polar - but “Frozen Lemon” and “Clay Green” might make their way into my own growing accumulation of 849s.

  5. Caran d’Ache Ecridor Racing Ballpoint and Mechanical Pencil Sets. The Ecridor Racing might be my favorite of Caran d’Ache’s higher-end releases, with the matte-black coated finish paired with a bright red racing stripe.

  6. Caran d’Ache Swiss Wood Pencils. We have Swiss Wood pencils available individually, in packs of 10, and in prepackaged gift sets perfect for the upcoming holidays. Most other Caran d’Ache pencils have been restocked as well, including the standard yellow office/school pencil and the wonderfully smooth 3B Edelweiss.

  7. Caran d’Ache “Color Treasure” Postcard Sets. I took a flyer and stocked some of these, and it turns out I absolutely love them. Part of this year’s holiday collection, these postcards are printed on thick watercolor paper that allows you to color with anything from colored pencil to fountain pen ink!

  8. TWSBI ECO “Cerulean Blue” Fountain Pen. Easily my favorite solid-color ECO fountain pen that TWSBI has released in the past couple of years (MAYBE with the exception of the discontinued Yellow), the Cerulean Blue is a vibrant dark turquoise that sets off the red finial. You can have a lot of fun with fountain pens for $32.99!

  9. TWSBI ECO “Glow Green” Fountain Pen. Apparently the glow-in-the-dark “Glow Green” ECO has kicked off a trend, because TWSBI just announced the “Glow Purple,” which glows blue and will launch on Halloween with pre-orders available a few days ahead of time. Be sure to check out the pics below!

  10. Platinum Preppy Wa Limited Edition Fountain Pens. This year’s Preppy Wa release features six new patterns drawn from Japanese tradition. Choose your favorite or collect all six for less than $50!

  11. Platinum Plaisir “Aura” Fountain Pen. I’ve been enjoying the pearlescent finish on this year’s limited edition Plaisir, and I’m liking it even more now that I’ve figured out that you can swap the fine or medium nib in the Plaisir for the sweet extra-fine nib sold in the Platinum Desk Pen!

In Stock: The Caran d'Ache 2022 Limited and Special Editions

October 18, 2022

Every year, Swiss maker Caran d’Ache releases multiple special and limited edition pens and pencils, often just in advance of the holidays. This year, they have released the “Colour Treasure” collection, the first of which have arrived! While the series will eventually include new special edition 849 Ballpoints and even a jumbo pencil set, we have in stock now these sets of 12 high-quality postcards designed to be colored using your favorite colored pencils, perfect for catching up on your holiday correspondence. (In my case, the particular postcard pictured here will be turned into a Patreon thank-you note.)

Shown here with the three-tone Midori MD colored pencil set.

We also have the rest of the Caran d’Ache 2022 releases, including this year’s Claim Your Style 849 Ballpoints, the Dark Violet and Pastel Yellow 849s, and the Black Code, Gold Bar, and Brut Rosé mechanical pencils designed to match the ballpoint versions. Finally, we have a healthy stock of the eminently giftable Swiss Wood Pencil Gift Sets, and the Caran d’Ache x Nespresso Edition No. 4 Swiss Wood Pencils.

It truly pains me to say it, but the holiday shopping season is starting now, whether I like it or not. (Personally, I enjoy Halloween and would prefer to celebrate my holidays one at a time.) That said, if you’ve had your eye on something that you are considering for a gift, please don’t sleep on it. Restocking has been delayed, especially for items arriving from overseas. Many thanks for your support!

It's Back! The T.G.S. x Penwell "Aged Red" Exclusive (Available for Preorder)

October 15, 2022

Over the past few years, I’ve had the opportunity to collaborate with some of my favorite makers on exclusive products, and one of the creations I’m most proud of is the first one: the T.G.S. exclusive Penwell pen holder in a unique “Aged Red” finish that draws its inspiration from the T.G.S. blog colors, burgundy and black. While these Penwells are powder-coated aluminum, as opposed to Urushi, I wanted to pick a finish that complements the look and depth of the dark red finish on my Nakaya Decapod. The subtle black and red grain on the Aged Red came out absolutely gorgeous during the last run, and given the number of requests for more I wanted to do another batch.

If you’re unfamiliar with the Penwell, it’s one of my favorite fountain pen accessories that allows you to turn any pen into a desk pen. I have one (or maybe two) on my desk at all times, and you can read my full write-up here.

Packaging may vary with the new run.

These special edition Penwells are available for preorder in the T.G.S. Curated Shop, priced at $75, which is the same price as the prior run and qualifies for free shipping. T.G.S. Patreon Supporters receive a special pricing + free shipping, so if you are a Patreon member, please check your messages. The Penwells should arrive in a week or so, and I will ship upon receipt. Please feel free to combine your Penwell pre-order with other items to save on shipping charges, though combined orders will ship together with the Penwell. Many thanks for your support, and I can’t wait to get them in your hands!

The T.G.S. Curated Shop is an authorized retailer of all brands sold. Also, a reminder that today is the last day to use your discount code as I’m returning from vacation. Use “VACAY10” at checkout to receive 10% off all paper orders.
