Thursday Drops: New Midori Multi-Year Journals, Kuretake Karappo Pens, Teranishi Inks and More Midori MD Cotton!

Today’s Thursday Drops post is merely the first wave of post-Fountain Pen Day and pre-Holiday restocks, but it maybe the biggest. We recently received a large shipment from TRAVELER’S Company and Midori, including new 10th Anniversary versions of the 3-year and 5-year journals, as well as the latest Field Notes release, new pens from Tom’s Studio (including a Japanese brush tip that fits the fountain pens), and a bunch of new Kuratake fibre and brush pens.

[Update: As of this morning (Friday November 8), Teranishi Guitar Inks are in stock! I had hoped to have them listed yesterday but they arrived a bit late and it took most of yesterday to swatch and photograph the inks.]

This quarter’s Field Notes Release features two groups of different covers, all featuring different bird illustrations by Rex Brasher.

1. Midori 10th Anniversary Kyo-Ori 3-Year and 5-Year Diaries. These beautiful special edition versions of the Midori Multi-Year Diaries feature two different fabrics. We also have the standard 3-year, 5-year, and 10-year journals in stock.

2. Teranishi Guitar Taisho Roman Haikara Inks. This series of 16 different Japanese inks spans the color spectrum and offers unique takes on different tones. From the swatches you will see that depending on the paper, many of the colors show some nice sheen, though it’s not overpowering.

4. Kuretake Karappo Fineliners and Brush Pens. My obsession with customizable fineliners - and now, even finer, firm-tipped brush pens, continues! The Fibre-tipped pens feature a point similar to that in the Tom’s Studio Wren, and the Brush Pen is firm enough to write with. Available in the larger brush pen (with refillable cartridges) or the packs of five fibre or brushed-tipped pens.

5. Midori MD Cotton Writing Pads. These favorites are now available once again in A5 and A4 sizes. Midori MD Cotton is one of my favorite fountain pen friendly papers, and I’m happy to have it back in pad and notebook format.

6. TRAVELER’S Notebook Starter Kit Restock! We once again have nearly all the colors (save for Blue in the standard-size, which is on backorder). Now is a great time to pick up your dated (or undated) planner refills, as well as this year’s limited edition accessories including the “Trip and Love” folders, pencil boards, and sticker sets.

7. Tom’s Studio Wren Refillable Fibre-Tipped Pens. To say the Wren has been a smash hit is an understatement. These sold so quickly during Fountain Pen Day weekend that we’re already going to have to place a pre-holiday restock. We also now have replacement tips and reservoirs available in the shop.

8. Tom’s Studio “Studio Pocket” Fountain Pens. Not only do we have more of the Studio Pocket Fountain Pens, but we now have the fountain pen compatible Brush Nibs. If you want to lay some ink on the page, this is worth your consideration.

9. Tom’s Studio .5mm Mechanical Pencils. These Tom’s Studio mechanical pencils feature a brass grip paired with the same excellent anodized aluminum construction found on the rest of the Tom’s Studio product line.

10. Tom’s Studio Poise Pencil Grip and Lumos Grip/Rollstop. I wrote a short post earlier this week about how I’ve enjoyed these two grip options, especially for longer work sessions. Both function as rollstops in addition to adding some girth to the grip section.

11. T.G.S. x Sunderland Machine Works mk1 Collaboration Pens. I thought I would send out an almost-last-call e-mail, given that we are down to 5 of these pens in the shop. While we do plan to restock, I cannot promise that more pens can be available before the end of the year, so if you have had your eye on one of these, don’t wait.

12. T.G.S. Fountain Pen Friendly Paper Sampler and Pencil Samplers. We assembled a Fountain Pen Friendly Paper Sampler especially for Fountain Pen Day, but had so much paper left over that I made a bunch more! There’s also a woodcase pencil version featuring some unique pencils from our back archive.

Unpacking the Fountain Pen Friendly Paper Sampler: Why a Sampler, and Why These Specific Papers?

I mentioned last week that a frequent request I receive for the shop is the sampler pack, namely fountain pen friendly paper and woodcase pencils. It’s somewhat counterintuitive: what’s the rationale behind paying $10 for 15-20 sheets of paper when you can get a full 50-pad sheet for the same price? The answer is that the “value” is in the money you don’t need to spend, something that really hit home as I’ve spent the past two weeks cleaning out my day job office as I prepare to go fully remote. I have multiple bankers’ boxes full of paper and notebooks that I purchased simply to test the paper - money I likely would not have needed to spend had there been readily available ways to test some of these brands and formats via sampler packs and pads containing different brands.

I still have a fair number of our Fountain Pen Day paper samplers - I ended up making more than my originally intended 15 - and I’ll continue to make them available for purchase online and in-store as long as my current supply of sampler paper holds out. After that, I will consider whether to re-up on the current sampler and/or expand what I offer. For today’s post, however, I thought it might be fun to talk a bit about each of the papers in the current fountain pen friendly paper sampler, how I personally have used it, and why I chose to include it in this initial pack. (Note: These papers are discussed in the order in which they appear in the sample pack, not any order of personal preference.)

• Write Notepads Paper. While there have been supply constraints recently (it’s a very small company), Write Notepads still makes some of my favorite cost-effective fountain pen friendly paper. It also comes in a wide variety of formats, from writing pads to hardcover notebooks to spiral and pocket notebooks. I know that many products are showing as out-of-stock, but they are on order. Fingers-crossed for a restock in the near future!

• Life Bank Paper. Life Bank Paper is a classic, “professional” paper that is one of my favorite off-white options. The A5 Bank Paper pad is a favorite of many for letter writing (this watermarked paper just looks classy) and it handles fountain pen ink extremely well with reasonable dry times.

• Life Noble Note. With a different (smoother?) feel than the Bank Paper, Life’s “Noble Note” paper is their standard workhorse offering. While excellent for fountain pens, I also find it pleasant to use with pencils.

• Rhodia. I included Rhodia mainly for comparison purposes. A sibling company of Clairefontaine, the papers are slightly different, with Rhodia - in my experience - slightly less fountain pen friendly but rather cost-effective if what you’re looking for is paper that performs well enough to be usable without breaking the bank.

• Clairefontaine Triomphe. Known for their bright white, extremely fountain pen friendly paper stock, Clairefontaine is probably my “inexpensive” paper of choice, if I had to name one. The Triomphe pads are marketed as suitable for correspondence, but they are also just as useful for general writing and notetaking. Clairefontaine recently released a series of softcover A5 notebooks using the Triomphe paper.

• Standard Clairefontaine Looseleaf and French-Ruled Looseleaf. Clairefontaine makes relatively inexpensive looseleaf paper, which is one thing I love about the brand, especially since it’s available in the Seyes/French-Ruled variant. This is the same paper used in the non-Triomphe notebooks and notepads, so you can use the looseleaf sheets in the sampler to see how this paper works for you.

• Life Airmail “Onionskin” Paper. While this paper may not appeal to everyone, I went ahead and included it in the paper sampler because its an interesting, non-mainstream paper option that has some historical significance. Onionskin paper was used to reduce postage rates for “airmail” being delivered long distances, and while no longer necessary, it’s a fun throwback, and it’s frankly kind of wild to see how well this ultra-thin paper handles fountain pen ink. (You’ll also note that the paper is back in stock - I found my stash of onionskin that had “disappeared” in the move.)

When you compare the various papers in the sampler, you will definitely find that some work better for you than others. However, some of them are more expensive than others, and you may have to pay for “peak” performance. As someone who has used a LOT of paper in their job over the years, I’ve personally focused on finding everyday paper that is good enough to handle the fine and medium fountain pens I use most of the time. For me, that’s typically some combination of Write Notepads, Clairefontaine, and Midori MD (which I may feature in another sampler later on). While I may not get to it in 2024, given that the holidays are already upon us and I’m barely keeping it together as it is, I would love to continue to offer this and other samplers going forward.

Get a Grip! New Tom's Studio Lumos Rollstops and Pencil Grips, as well as Fountain Pen Brush Tips!

Sometimes for a longer writing session, it’s helpful to add some width to the grip section of narrower writing instruments. Tom’s Studio has released two options: a leather padded grip/rollstop for the Lumos series of refillable fineliners, and a textured aluminum pencil grip dubbed the “Poise” that securely attaches with a brass thumbscrew similar to that found on the One-Dip Nibs (which, by the way, are back in stock!). For those who prefer a mechanical pencil option, we now also offer the Tom’s Studio .5mm mechanical pencils, which feature a contoured brass section and are paired with a lightweight aluminum body for excellent balance.

Both of the Tom’s Studio grips impressed me because they are easily adjustable via rotation to accommodate a variety of grip styles. As noted, both also act as rollstops to keep your pens and pencils from rolling off the table.

8. The Paper Mind Cosmo Air Light Notebook (via Pen Addict - Sarah). Cosmo Air Light paper continues to be available, despite supposedly being discontinued. I’m all for it, since people do love this paper.

9. Restoring Order (Slowly) (via From the Pen Cup). I feel this, as I’m in the process of moving out of one of my offices after 14 years with multiple bankers boxes worth of accumulated junk. It’s been a long dig out.

I’m really loving this Tom’s Studio “Midnight” Fibre Tip Ink: Yes, it’s water-resistant (I would almost say “waterproof”, as it survived a soak with minimal smearing), but it feathers in fountain pens as it’s quite wet and tailored to the fineliner experience.

Ask TGS: Five Reasons I Love Fountain Pen Day Weekend!

I say “Fountain Pen Day Weekend”, because the celebration always starts early and keeps going through Sunday night. Today’s post might be relatively brief, because we’ve seen a steady stream of customers in the shop on Thursday and Friday, and I’m looking forward to a busy Saturday, which is always our busiest day anyway! It’s always fun to go to work with this particular business, but here are five reasons why I feel Fountain Pen Day is important and why I continue to support the annual event:

1. Building a Greater Sense of Community. I truly do hope that Fountain Pen Day remains something more than just an early “Black Friday,” because it’s important to take a day to remember that there’s a large community of enthusiasts around the world that values writing by hand and what it represents. While those of us who are able to visit a pen show or two (or seven) annually get this fix in person, for many that’s not possible, and Fountain Pen Day might be the next best thing.

2. A Reason to “Go Shopping” in Your Own Collection or Stash. I personally choose three or four pen and ink pairings from my personal collection that I haven’t used in far too long, and rediscover why I enjoy them. It’s a bit of an annual tradition during the week leading up to Fountain Pen Day to clean out everything I currently have inked and choose a fresh set that will close out the year. Do you have any Fountain Pen Day traditions?

3. An Excuse to Try New Writing Styles. Another “tradition” is that I choose a new-to-me writing instrument, ink, paper, or other writing-related accessory to broaden my horizons. This year it’s been the fine fibre-tipped brush pen. While I’ve spent most of the year getting deep into the refillable fineliner category, I recently inked up the Kuretake Karappo fine brush pen and really enjoyed it. It’s slightly firmer than a traditional brush pen, so you can use it for actual writing while still maintaining a touch of line variation.

4. Save Some Money. Yes, sometimes it’s nice to get a price break, especially if you’re trying a new brand or style of pen. While I always offer as much of a discount as I can for Fountain Pen Day, this year I wanted to do something to help beginners find their way in the increasingly crowded and confusing paper segment. Customers have asked for a fountain pen friendly paper “sampler” that allows them to try out various brands without having to purchase full notebooks or writing pads, so I assembled a limited number of them containing some of our more popular paper offerings. If this product gets a good reception, I’ll try to expand the selection and add it as a regular item.

5. An Opportunity to Support Your Local Artisans and Retailers, and Smaller Manufacturers. While it may seem self-interested since I’m a retailer and business owner in this space, I feel an obligation to remind everyone that this is a hard business. Margins are low and smaller retailers and makers face competition every day from bulk sellers, discounters, and the online giants of the world that encourage indiscriminate buying of “all the things” as opposed to more considered purchases of items that are both useful and well-made, and will serve you well for a long-time. I’ve always tried to focus both the site (and later, my shop) on this latter category. Every holiday season, whether it’s Fountain Pen Day or Black Friday, remember that where you spend your dollars matters, and if there’s a brand or maker that you love and want to remain in business, be sure to support them when it counts.
