Comparing Low Viscosity Ballpoint Pens: Jetstream vs. Acroball vs. Anterique vs. Ohto

February 8, 2025

It’s been interesting to see pen manufacturers - especially the Japanese manufacturers - move away from standard ballpoints to low viscosity refills. You sometimes hear these refills referred to as “hybrid gel-ballpoint”, because they combine the permanence and quick dry times of a classic ballpoint pen with the smoothness of a gel pen. Personally, I love them, and they form a core part of my own everyday writing rotation. The downside is that outside the Jetstream line, you don’t have many color options, with most companies offering these refills only in black.

In order of darkness, I would rank the inks as follows: Pilot Acro Ink, Uni Jetstream, Anterique Mach Ball, and Ohto. In order of dry time, I would rank them the exact inverse: Ohto, Anterique Mach Ball, Uni Jetstream, and Pilot Acro Ink. That’s not to say that any of them “dry slowly,” but with a darker like, you will get more smoothness, and with that added smoothness comes increased dry time because it means more ink is on the page.

With so many of these sorts of pens entering the market, I thought it might be helpful to do a quick comparison of my thoughts on four of the most common brands: Pilot (Acro-Ink / Acroball), Uni (Jetstream), Ohto (various needle-tip refills), and Anterique (“Mach-ball”). See below for my thoughts on each. Please note that this post is not intended to be comprehensive, but rather an overview of the more popular refills that I often get asked about, with a focus on how they compare to one another. For a more general overview of low-viscosity ballpoints, including other brands, see this post here.

  • Uni Jetstream. Probably the easiest to find of all the refills featured in this post, the Jetstream comes in anything from D1 size to Uni’s own proprietary multi-pen size to a standard Parker-style cartridge. The biggest selling point of the Jetstream is the number of options you have. D1 and multi pen refills come in colors that include black, blue, red, and green, and even though the Parker-style cartridges are available only in black, you still have .38mm, .5mm, and .7mm tip sizes. Jetstreams are smooth writers - maybe not quite as smooth as Pilot’s Acro-ink, but you’d have to be a pretty big ballpoint aficionado to notice the difference.

  • Pilot Acro-Ink. In my opinion, the smoothest, easiest-writing refill on this list. While Pilot’s Acro-Ink refills aren’t quite as ubiquitous as the Jetstream line, I like them for longer-form writing. The .7mm writes a smooth line without smearing, and in my opinion it’s a better .7mm tip size than the Jetstream. These refills are found in the Pilot S20 ballpoints, the “Dr. Grip” line, and the Pilot “Acroball” pens that you can sometimes find in larger office supply stores.

  • Anterique “Mach Ball” Refill. Anterique is known for taking the classic vintage-style click pen and upgrading it with their excellent refill. It only comes in one tip size (.5mm), with black ink, but it’s a great pen and relatively inexpensive. Pro tip: you can often substitute one of these refills into a standard vintage Bic Clic ballpoint. I have a large collection of vintage ballpoint pens, and it’s been a joy to give many of them a fresh life with a new refill. Sometimes you have to trim or extend the Anterique refill, as I don’t think the specs on the Clic were consistent over the years, but there are only a couple of exceptions where I was unable to make it work. Anterique’s biggest selling point is that it dries nearly instantaneously.

  • Ohto Needle-Tip Ballpoint Refill. The ultra-precise .5mm needle-tip ballpoint has become Ohto’s hallmark. Of all the pens on this page, Ohto’s are on the drier side, but what this means is that you will get a very precise line and zero smearing. Ohto makes the refill for Object Index, Traveler’s Company, and Mark’style branded pens. Honestly, if you see any Japanese needle-tip ballpoint pen, chances are it’s an Ohto.

Writing sample pens are, from left, the Pilot S20 (shown here in brown), the Anterique Mach Ball Standard Size, the Object Index Cedar Pen, and the Uni Jetstream 4+1 Bamboo.

I’m a huge fan of ballpoints and they play a huge role in my everyday working life because, well, they just work. We stock a wide variety in our shop, and if you come visit us in person, ask to try each of the refills featured here, as we have testers generally available.

Anterique pens come in dozens of colors!

New Arrivals: Anterique Brass Pens in Forest Green, Plus New Colors and Formats!

October 8, 2024

Anterique makes some of my favorite low-viscosity ballpoint pens on the market, though they have yet to really hit the mainstream in the U.S. Curiously, they receive somewhat of a top billing here in the U.K. (where I’m currently on a “work trip”), having seen these excellent everyday writers featured front and center in a couple different shops. Last week before I left we received a shipment of the Anterique Brass Ballpoints in a new color (Dark Forest Green), and the standard pens in a new Hazy Pink and Deep Purple. Just prior to this shipment, we also expanded our Anterique selection by bringing in the Anterique Mini pocket pens, in both brass and standard. Shop our full selection of Anterique here!

New Arrivals: Anterique Mini Ballpoint Pens, Including Brass Editions!

August 13, 2024

Anterique’s low-viscosity ballpoint pens are one of my favorite go-anywhere options for those situations where I need a durable everyday writer, and now they’ve released a pocket-sized version of their Standard and Brass Edition pens! The Anterique “Mini” will fit just about anywhere, and is perfect for clipping to your pocket notebook, Plotter Mini-5, or Traveler’s Passport-sized Notebook for writing on the go.

My clear red mini with one of my takeaway rarities from last week’s D.C. Pen Show!

Currently, the “Brass Edition” Mini is available in five different “clear” colors (crystal, yellow, blue, red, and green), and the standard Mini in nine colors. Note that these parts are all interchangeable with the components of all other Anterique Pens: for example, if you’d like to make a “Danube Blue” brass pen, you can combine the upper part of a standard “Danube Blue” ballpoint with the brass barrel of the mini or standard-sized brass edition pen. The mini pens do take a shorter refill than the standard Anterique “Mach Ball”, though it uses the same low-viscosity ballpoint ink and .5mm tip.

In addition to the new mini-sized Anterique pens, we have new colors of the standard-sized pens, as well as new full-size brass options! Be sure to check these out as Anterique is constantly adding new variations to their existing product line.

A while back I walked through the entire Anterique lineup on YouTube. (Yes, the parts are interchangeable. Happy Frankenpenning!)

New Arrivals: 30+ Different Varieties of Anterique Pens, Plus Anterique "High-Lighters"!

November 14, 2023

Anterique Stationers has taken the classic vintage-style click pen and improved upon it vastly, adding a .5mm “Mach Ball” refill that in my opinion rivals the Uniball Jetstream in terms of reliability, smoothness, and smear resistance. After a trial with the core colors, we recently added to our stock and now offer 30+ different varieties of this pen, including new white + clear demonstrator models. The Brass Ballpoints (shown above) have also been fully restocked, including in two new colors.

We’ve also brought in Anterique’s whimsical highlighters (or “High-Lighters”), which are standard chisel-tipped highlighter markers but take on the appearance of vintage paint tubes.

The updated T.G.S. Annual Holiday Gift Guide with be forthcoming later this week, and I expect Anterique Stationers to feature prominently. These pens are excellent gift ideas for people on your list who may appreciate a good pen but not necessarily something far outside their comfort zone. The design is immediately familiar to pretty much anyone, as is the upgrade in quality!

New Arrivals: Anterique Ballpoints + Mechanical Pencils in 26 Colors, plus the Endless Creator Fountain Pen!

June 6, 2023

I don’t think I quite prepared myself for bringing in the ENTIRE LINE of the Anterique ballpoint pens and mechanical pencils. These top-sellers are now listed in a whopping 26 different colors for the ballpoint pens, along with the .5mm mechanical pencils, which come in eight different colors at the moment with probably more on the way. A few things to know about the Anterique Ballpoints specifically:

  • The barrel tops and bottoms are all interchangeable. While we also carry a selection of bicolor pens released in partnership with Mark’s Tokyo (which feature the Mark’style “Days” motif), you can combine different colors of the standard Anterique ballpoints to create your own unique style.

  • In addition to the standard vintage click-pen, we also carry the brass barrel “upgrade”, sold in four different colors. Note that you can customize your brass pen by swapping in the upper piece from one of the 26 standard colors. (Pens are all sold separately - any modifications are your own project!)

  • I’ve had some success swapping the excellent Anterique .5mm Mach Ball refill into vintage Bic Clic Pens. For a short discussion on how to do this, and how certain editions of the Bic Clic might require some hacks and modifications, check out this post.

The Anterique Mechanical Pencils maintain the same vintage style design with what they describe as a "cushion slide mechanism" that prevents the core from breaking when strong writing pressure is applied. With heavy pressure, a spring releases the lead upwards, preventing breakage.

The Endless Creator Retractable Fountain Pen Has Arrived!

While it’s been a topic of conversation since its announcement at the beginning of the year, the Endless Creator Retractable Fountain Pen has finally landed at retailers. This retractable (i.e., capless) fountain pen features a push-button mechanism similar to the Pilot Capless/Vanishing Point and the Platinum Curidas, but with an original faceted design that’s distinct from anything else on the market. So far, I’ve been impressed with the tester I’ve been using, and it’s a fun product for the $50 price point. These are currently in stock and available with fine nibs only.
