Five Knockaround Fountain Pens for the Office and Beyond

November 27, 2021

While Black Friday weekend continues, and everyone is doing their shopping with all the different promotions available, I had the idea to do a short post containing some ideas beyond those in this year’s T.G.S. Gift Guide. I’ve become mildly obsessed with the idea of finding the perfect “knockaround” fountain pen for the office: a functional fountain pen that you can leave in your bag, on your desk at work, or stuck in the loop in your planner and not worry excessively about whether it’s going to “walk away” or get damaged. This category isn’t the same for everyone, since we all operate at different price points, but for reliable fountain pens this category typically starts around $20 (excluding the Platinum Preppy, which is much less expensive).

  1. Platinum Preppy. I know several people who keep a fistful of these pens inked up at all times, either to give away to the fountain pen curious or eyedropped with inks they’re “experimenting” with. Preppies are also extremely inexpensive everyday writers, starting at around $4.50 for the standard version, with even the limited edition “Preppy Wa” pens priced at just over $7.

  2. Platinum Plaisir. Though they feature the same nib, the Platinum Plaisir is a slight upgrade over the Preppy in terms of both looks and durability, since the pen sports an aluminum barrel that comes in a wide array of colors and will take more of a beating than the Preppy. Honestly, the Plaisir will often be my choice over the Preppy (unless I’m eyedroppering to test inks), since I appreciate the added splash of color. Available starting at $22.

  3. TWSBI Swipe. Honestly, TWSBI’s latest low-cost fountain pen has blown me away with its value proposition. Not only do you get a reliable nib from a reputable brand, but unlike any other pen on this list, it ships with a converter (actually, two converters) to allow you to fill with bottled ink, in addition to using a cartridge. Available priced at $26.99.

  4. Caran d’Ache 849 Fountain Pen. Looking for a fountain pen to match your classic Caran d’Ache 849 ballpoint pen or rollerball? The Caran d’Ache 849 fountain pen features a springy stainless steel nib that’s pleasant to write with, and is also somewhat slimmer, allowing it to fit in planner pen loops that might otherwise be too small to fit bulkier fountain pens. Available at $52.

  5. Midori MD Fountain Pen. Sure, the plastic barrel isn’t much to write home about (even if it is tastefully color-matched to the Midori MD aesthetic), but the nib on this pen is exceptional. Midori has taken the same nib used in the Traveler’s Company brass bullet pens and tweaked it so the nib turns slightly downward, supposedly to better hold up to the harder writing pressure of modern users (and probably those inexperienced with fountain pens). The firm writing experience reminds me of a wider (M) posting nib. Available priced at $38.

Please note that of the fountain pens on this list, the Caran d’Ache 849 and the Midori MD Fountain pen take standard international cartridges, while the Platinum Pens and the TWSBI Swipe accept proprietary cartridges sold by those specific brands. If you’re looking for refills for these particular pens, either for yourself or to include with a gift for someone else, we carry standard international cartridges by Caran d’Ache and Traveler’s Company, as well as both TWSBI Cartridges and bottled ink. Platinum Preppy pens ship with one Platinum ink cartridge included.

T.G.S. Curated Shop Black Friday

T.G.S. Black Friday/Cyber Monday Sale: Take 10% off with "BLACKFRIDAY"

November 26, 2021

I hope everyone stateside enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving with their family and friends, and most importantly was able to set aside things like work and shopping for a day! “Black Friday” typically kicks off the holiday shopping season in full, and has morphed from a single day to a nearly week-long extravaganza of discounts and promotions. The T.G.S. Curated Shop Black Friday discount is fairly straightforward: Take 10% off all orders placed through Cyber Monday (November 29, 11:59pm ET) using the coupon code “BLACKFRIDAY” at checkout. Don't forget this is also good on all items in the “Gently Used” shop, which features pieces from my own personal collection that I’m trying to clear out.

For the full details of what we are focused on this holiday season in the shop, please check out the T.G.S. 2021 Holiday Gift Guide! As I noted Tuesday, we recently restocked on:

  • Midori MD Notebooks, Notepads, Pens, and Pencils. We currently have all sizes and rulings of Midori MD notebooks in stock, as well as notebook covers, woodcase pencils, and even the Midori MD fountain pen.

  • Traveler’s Company Notebooks and Pens. A leather Traveler’s Notebook, personalized for the recipient with refills and accessories that you think they’ll enjoy, would make a wonderful gift (and it’s one of the most versatile pieces of stationery kit out there if you’re shopping for yourself). We carry the entire line, including the newly released “B-Sides and Rarities” Collection that features a series of refills containing specialty papers chosen by Traveler’s Company for unique purposes.

  • Hightide Folding Book Stands and Sandglasses. These desk accessories have been favorites since I started the Curated Shop, and Book Stands now come in nearly a dozen different colors, with Sandglasses being difficult to keep in stock. I should have more available soon if they end up selling out over the weekend.

  • Penco “Perfection” Bullet Pens. Penco makes a range of high quality pocket pens and pencils, including the brass “Perfection” bullet pens as well as the pocket drafting pens. Nearly all versions are currently available.

This discount is good for all brands with the exception of TWSBI and Sunderland, which I’m unable to discount due to my agreements with those companies. The T.G.S. Curated Shop is an authorized retailer of all brands sold. By shopping with us directly, you are supporting original content, pen reviews, pen show events, etc. from The Gentleman Stationer. If you would like to support us even further, please consider checking out the T.G.S. Patreon Program, which offers access to online meetups, exclusive discounts and pre-orders, and more!

Esterbrook x Accutron: The Collaboration Continues with New Esties, Including an Oversize!

November 24, 2021

When we last looked at the collaboration between American “heritage” brands Esterbrook and Accutron, it was limited to a special edition Esterbrook Camden fountain pen in a gorgeous green shade. Recently, Esterbrook and Accutron have followed up with two new limited edition Estie fountain pens in green and gold DiamondCast material, in both standard and oversized versions. All feature details such as the Accutron “tuning fork” logo on the cap and nib that set these pens apart from the standard Esterbrook lineup.

To recap a bit from my previous post, the “Accutron” brand was first associated with a line of watches manufactured by Bulova, and recently relaunched as a separate company by the Citizen Group. You can read more about both vintage and modern Accutron watches on dedicated watch sites such as Hodinkee, and the story behind the development of the technology is fascinating. Short version: Accutron watches bridged the gap between traditional mechanical watches and modern quartz watches, introducing a unique “tuning fork” movement that was one of the first mass-market electronic watches available. Esterbrook distributor Kenro and Accutron were kind enough to send me the modern Accutron “Spaceview” watch pictured here, so that I could get a sense of the current company’s aesthetic and how it complements the limited edition Esterbrook pens. I won’t do a full watch review, since that steps out side my area of expertise, but I did enjoy wearing the watch for a few days, and if you enjoy the Accutron look, I’d encourage you to read the full Hodinkee write-up of the Spaceview 2020 here.

My First Experience with the Oversized Estie

This particular post will focus on one of the two pens I was sent for review: the Accutron x Esterbrook Oversized Estie, which - believe it or not - I’ve never had the opportunity to test for an extended period of time. I’ve always though I would remain partial to the “standard” size Estie fountain pen, since (1) it’s quite comfortable and nearly the perfect size for me; and (2) it posts, which can be important given how/where I do much of my daily writing. That said, after having a few weeks to test out the oversized version, I’m beginning to reconsider.

Here’s what I enjoy about the Oversized Estie:

  • This pen has fantastic balance. While the standard Estie is extremely comfortable to use, the Oversized pen is perfectly weighted for unposted use, and even though it’s a big pen, you don’t notice the size. I would compare the overall length and proportions to a slightly slimmer Opus 88 Jazz.

  • JoWo 18k nibs are among my favorite stock nib units. I’ve had several JoWo 18k gold nibs in my collection over the years, and they never fail to disappoint. This medium nib arrived perfectly tuned, and I’ve not experienced any issues with skipping or hard-starting.

  • The larger pen body is the perfect canvas for showcasing the DiamondCast material. If you’re unfamiliar with “DiamondCast”, it’s a material made by McKenzie Penworks in here in Tennessee, which features a mixture of alumilite, pigment and real diamond dust. You can read more on the McKenzie Penworks website.

If there’s anything that I don’t enjoy about the Estie Oversized, it would be the metal threads on the barrel, which, in my opinion, somewhat disrupts the streamlined design of the pen. At the same time, the threads are not sharp at all, so they don’t interfere with a comfortable grip, and the added bit of metal front-weights the pen which likely contributes to the excellent balance I noted above. Taken as a whole, this is an aesthetic preference for me that at the end of the day, won’t prevent me from adding an Oversized Estie to my collection.

The Accutron “Tuning Fork” logo dates back to the “tuning fork movement” used in vintage Accutron watches.

Takeaways and Where to Buy

Unlike the Camden, which was available only from select Accutron watch retailers, the new Esterbrook x Accutron Diamondcast Esties pictured here are also available through most major Esterbrook pen retailers. Like other Esties made from Diamondcast material, the price point is higher than standard Estie fountain pens, with the standard model bearing an MSRP of $395 / $316 retail, and the oversized priced at $750 MSRP / $675 retail. (The Oversized version comes only with a 18k JoWo Nib.) If you’re a fan of this green and gold Diamondcast material, or looking for an Accutron-branded Estie to match a recent watch purchase, I’d act quickly because these pens are part of a limited edition series and won’t be around forever. In fact, they’re already sold out at some retailers.

The Esterbrook x Accutron Estie Oversize pens are numbered in an edition of 100.

On a more general note, count me a fan of the Estie Oversized! I’m already looking for the perfect model to add to the permanent rotation, and strongly considering one of the “Nouveau Bleu” models with the gold trim, perhaps adding a “Scribe” specialty nib.

Many thanks to Esterbrook and Kenro Industries for making this review possible. This post does not contain affiliate links, nor was I compensated for this review. All products shown here were lent to The Gentleman Stationer for review purposes and returned afterwards.

The ink haul from my recent Chicago trip, which I ended up breaking into a bit this week.

Sunday Reading for November 21, 2021

November 21, 2021
  1. 8 Fresh Designs to Get You Excited About Fountain Pens Again (via UK Fountain Pens). We all go through that period when everything starts to look the same as what you already have/have tried, and you need something new to rekindle the interest. This article is literally a checklist of pens I have not tried but need to get my hands on ASAP.

  2. Traveling with Fountain Pens - Planes, Trains, and Automobiles (via Pen Addict). Kimberly has a great guide for traveling with fountain pens as we head into the holiday season and many of us will be hitting the road or taking to the skies. Personally, I’m also an experienced pen traveler who does absolutely nothing special with my fountain pens before I get on an airplane. If they burp ink, they burp ink, and I’m just careful to have a paper towel on hand when I arrive at my destination. I rarely have any issues with modern pens.

  3. Stalogy Planners (via Left Hook Pens). I continue to be very happy with my converted Stalogy notebook cut down to Traveler’s size, which Hayley was kind enough to mention in her own review.

  4. Tianzi Sky Blue Piston-Fill Fountain Pen (via Rants of the Archer). Another lower-priced piston-fill fountain pen option? Apparently there’s one more I have to try!

  5. The Go-To Notebook Review (via The Poor Penman). Chronicle Books has released a high-end notebook that appears to perform surprisingly well with fountain pens. What’s the most interesting to me is the fact that Mohawk Paper is prominently featured in the copy, suggesting they are trying to raise their profile in the stationery business.

  6. Uni Jetstream Edge (via Writing at Large). The design on this pen is what caught my eye, but what kept me reading was the comparison to the Traveler’s Company ballpoint, a needle-tip favorite. I need to pick one of these up.

  7. Ferris Wheel Press Cream of Early Grey (via Mountain of Ink). Kelli reviews and ink that has long fascinated me, even if it’s probably not usable for my everyday purposes. I do have a sample that I need to break out, eventually.

  8. Accessories for the Desk: Makers Cabinet Hovel & Iris Review (via Pencilcase Blog). What, you mean part of this hobby involves making questionable financial decisions? Dries takes a look at two luxury desk accessories, the Hovel pencil planer and the Iris circle compass, which were recently rebranded under the name “Makers Cabinet”.

  9. Paul’s Fountain Pen Journal (via Well-Appointed Desk). I also was not aware that Paul was offering a paid subscription to his fountain pen-focused publication, Paul’s Fountain Pen Journal. Please check it out, and Ana has all the links and details.

In Case You Missed It…

This week on the blog I looked at inks! (I know, I’ve been on an ink review kick lately but you all seem to be enjoying them and I have a lot of inks to get through. Plus I’ve been doing a lot of writing at the day job.) Check out my review of Anderillium “Cuttlefish Brown,” a sepia-colored ink, as well as this first look at several Sailor inks I picked up during my recent trip to Chicago that includes Manyo HaHa and four entries in the Sailor Ink Studio collection.

Check out the 2021 T.G.S. Holiday Gift Guide and New Shop Arrivals

In advance of this year’s holiday shopping season, I launched the 2021 edition of the T.G.S. Holiday Gift Guide, which features more than a dozen different gift ideas from the T.G.S. Curated Shop, including recently restocked old favorites and some new ideas for this year. This week’s Deals & Drops goes into the new arrivals and shop restocks in a bit more detail, including Hightide Sandglasses and Folding Book Stands, as well as the full range of Penco “Perfection” pocket pens! Finally, don’t forget that the “Gently Used” Shop has been restocked with items from my own personal collection that I’ve decided to part with.
