Yes, Micarta for me! I finally got my hands on Some Micarta Pens, Plus My Own Special Edition

April 19, 2025

So right off the bat, for those who may not have been with me back in 2015, the title of today’s post is a throwback reference to my one guest appearance on Episode #161 of the Pen Addict: No Micarta for You, in which I lamented my inability to get my hands on one of the rare TWSBI Micarta pens. Though I haven’t listened to this episode in a while, it offers some insight into the origins of T.G.S., how it began, and how my interests have evolved over time. And, no, I never did get my hands on one of the TWSBI Micarta pens, from either of the two releases, but I may have something better to discuss today: More micarta!

A Leonardo Momento Zero fountain pen in brown canvas Micarta, which was an exclusive to Stilo e Stile and is no longer available, unfortunately.

What the heck is “micarta”, and why do people like it?

Micarta is a lightweight, durable material used to make anything from pool cues to guitar nuts to knife handles, in addition to smaller “everyday carry” items such as pens. Micarta’s cloth-like texture is due to the fact that it’s actually made by compressing fiber (cloth, canvas, paper), infusing it with resin and curing it under heat and pressure into blocks or rods that can be machined. The resulting material lends a tactile feel to fountain pens and will patina nicely over time. (Especially if you don’t baby it and worry about ink splatters.) In the decade since the Pen Addict podcast episode was originally recorded, I’ve accumulated a few different “micarta” fountain pens, as well as handful of other micarta products such as pocket knives.

Two fountain pens made of canvas micarta: A Skogsy pen (top) and the Leonardo. Note that the Leonardo paired metal threads with a plastic-lined inner cap for increased durability, though I’ve not had issues with the Skogsy threads wearing and they remain functional two years in.

A note on terminology: Micarta has been around for a century or more. When capitalized, “Micarta” typically refers to the trade name of the original product. The lower-case “micarta” more generally refers to the broader category of resin-infused fabric materials that share the same general properties but each of which may have its own unique look and feel. I enjoy micarta in the same way I enjoy other tactile materials such as waxed canvas and wood. As the products age, they will take on their own character, and generally will darken due to exposure to things like ink and hand oil. Because micarta is durable, it’s unlikely to break, though you may get some stray threads and minor fraying over time. All of my personal pens shown here have held up well.

Another shot of my Skogsy Cholla in black canvas Micarta. If you look hard enough, you will see that the section and cap have an awesome greenish hue (due to me filling them with green ink). :)

Despite its popularity, micarta pens still remain relatively uncommon. Because the material can be hard on tooling and difficult to work with, some penmakers can’t or won’t use it, and the pens end up being relatively expensive as a result. Also, as I referenced above, because it’s a fiber-based material, micarta can absorb ink if you dip the section into an ink bottle or have a spill/inksplosion into the cap. This tendency to “stain” drives away some consumers, but I personally think of it as more of a feature. I dip my micarta pens into ink bottles all the time (especially the black ones), and over time the pens develop a unique patina as a result. If you’re someone who loves the look of aged/worn leather or canvas, consider adding a micarta pen to your collection.

No matter how careful you are, you will get a drop of ink somewhere on the pen. This red splotch was either transfer from my desk or the result of posting the pen.

Where can you get micarta pens today?

While the TWSBI Micarta was a bit of a unicorn at the time, as more penmakers gain familiarity with the material, you have started to see micarta pens released in small batches by smaller specialty makers. Leonardo did the micarta Momento Zero collaboration with Italian retailer Stilo e Stile, and Skogsy Pens and Hinze Pens actually sub-specialize in micarta pens (though you may have to visit a pen show to get the best ones). In addition to traditional “canvas micarta”, suppliers such as CrazyFiber are now making micarta-style materials in a variety of colors and even some wild patterns. I have three micarta fountain pens in my collection: a Skogsy Cholla in black canvas micarta, one of the Leonardos, and two Hinze Taschenstift prototypes from the development of our latest exclusive release.

A better shot of the green-toned section on my black Skogsy.

to Conclude, a Shamless Plug for the latest TGS x Hinze RElease

Given my history, I felt like I had to do a micarta pen as one of our special editions. For our latest collaboration, we worked with Hinze Pens on a pocket-sized fountain pen in a dark purple and black CrazyFiber material they call “Violet Tendencies.” This particular design features a cap that friction-posts, as opposed to the threaded barrel that Hinze typically uses. In my experience, CrazyFiber isn’t quite as absorbent as the canvas-style micarta, but given that this pen includes a metal section, those of you who might be squeamish about staining your pens won’t have to worry about this one. Especially if you use purple ink. I hope to do more with micarta in the future, including adding some full-sized pens to the shop.

We went all-in on the purple as something different. Believe me, it’s purple.

Thursday Drops: New TGS x Hinze Pens Taschenstift in Violet Micarta, Pilot Restock, Lamy Swift Capless Rollerballs, and More

April 10, 2025

The big news this week is the launch of the latest collaboration from T.G.S. and Hinze Pen Company: a micarta “Taschenstift” Pocket Pen in a material dubbed “Violet Tendencies"! We’ve worked with Hinze for over a year on a special Taschenstift model for this material, and have opted for a micarta pen that friction-posts the cap on the barrel rather than the standard design that uses threads. The pen features a dark purple section and Lilac anodized nib. All pens are hand-turned by Hinze Pen Co., feature hand-tuned nibs, and will ship with a mini converter to allow you to fill from a bottle. Retail price is $250, with a special price available for T.G.S. Patreon members.

The Lamy Swift Capless Rollerball (shown here in matte black) has been a favorite new addition.

We’ve dodged a bit of a bullet on price increases (for now) as many tariffs have been postponed. In any event, we’re continuing to increase our stock to ride out any future tariff-related volatility, and have received restocks of Pilot, Lamy, and more. We’ve also added some new products, including Clairefontaine Hardcover A4 Notebooks, which many have requested, and brought back the A7 Life.Unplugged pocket notebooks which will fit the Lochby Sidekick.

We are open this week, Thursday-Saturday! Check out our hours for each day here. Saturday is always the long day with 10-6 opening hours. I hope to see you all in person soon!

  1. T.G.S. x Hinze Pens Taschestift “Violet Tendencies”. Our latest release in collaboration with Dallas-based Hinze Pens! All nib sizes remain available.

  2. Pilot Vanishing Point Fountain Pens. We have additional stock of the Pilot Vanishing Point Fountain Pens in the matte trim finishes, as well as the black and blue “Carbonesque” barrels.

  3. Pilot Iroshizuku Ink. We are restocked on most colors of Pilot’s excellent Iroshizuku bottled ink, and we have them in cartridges as well as bottles.

  4. Lamy Swift Capless Rollerball Pens. One of my favorite new discoveries from the deep LAMY back catalogue, which I’ve never used until this year.

  5. Lochby A5 Field Folio and A5 Field Journal. The Field Folio adds a zipper closure to Lochby’s popular A5 Field Journal.

  6. Lochby Sidekick. This small wallet/notebook/penholder is sized to fit A7 notebooks, which we now have back in stock. See the entry immediately below.

  7. Clairefontaine A7 Notebooks. These popular two-packs of A7 notebooks are back! Featuring fountain-pen friendly Clairefontaine paper, each comes with one black notebook and one colored version. Colors are sorted randomly.

  8. Blackwing x George Harrison Songwriter’s Notebook. Developed in collaboration with the George Harrison Estate, this A5 notebook features 80gsm paper and comes with one exclusive Blackwing pencil unavailable anywhere else.

  9. Kuretake Ink Café Art Nouveau Fountain Pen Inks. These inks feature some of the prettiest box/bottle artwork I’ve ever seen, based on classic Art Nouveau posters and advertisements.

  10. Clairefontaine Hardback A4 Notebooks. These hardcover notebooks contain 96 sheets/192 pages of fountain pen friendly Clairefontaine paper (lined/ruled).

Thursday Drops: Summer Sangria Ink Giveaway, Hinze Crimson Nibs and More!

July 20, 2023

I’m simultaneously excited and somewhat sad to make this announcement: We are down to fewer than 10 remaining Hinze collaboration pens, and while I originally thought I would be able to bring some with me to the D.C. Pen Show the first week of August, that may not be the case. (I would really be surprised if they lasted until San Francisco at the end of August.) All that’s to say: If you’ve had your eyes on one of these, especially with the red nib, you don’t want to wait. To be clear, this isn’t a limited edition, and I’ll probably do more pens or something similar eventually, but I have other projects on my radar that will get attention first.

Crimson nib options are now available in all sizes!

To celebrate this milestone, we’re giving away one bottle of the “Summer Sangria” fountain pen ink that comes with every Hinze Pen! I ended up with an extra so I’m allowed to give it away. All you have to do is like this Instagram post and on Sunday after 11:59pm CT I will use a random number generator and draw a winner. Enjoy!

The Gentleman Stationer is an authorized retailer of all brands sold.

  1. T.G.S. x Hinze Collaboration Fountain Pen. Now available with the nano-plated nibs in crimson! We received a shipment of these gorgeous nibs yesterday, and have enough so that the fewer than 10 pens remaining can ship with either a black or crimson nib. (Note that if you want to take advantage of the pen + ink + Penwell bundle, by default that ships with the black nib, but send me a message and I will substitute the red at your request.)

  2. TWSBI ECO “Heat” Fountain Pen. I don’t think there could be a more seasonal release, whether you judge by either color or name. Alternatively, if anything with “heat” in the name is too much for you these days, we also have the cooler Cerulean Blue ECO, ECO-T Mint Blue, the “Ice Blue” Swipe, and more!

  3. Midori MD Dip Pen. Midori has expanded their lineup of pens this year to include not only their MD Fountain Pen and 70th Anniversary Fountain Pen and Ink, but this dip pen that includes the same fountain pen nib.

  4. TWSBI 580 AL Rose and ALR “Punch Pink”. We’re down to our last few of these two colors that will likely be discontinued in the near future. (They may already have been discontinued - this is the last remaining stock.)

  5. Stalogy Notebooks. The Stalogy 1/2-Year and 365-Day Notebooks have enough paper to cover their respective time periods - you can use them as daily notebooks, undated planners, or ignore the “daily” feature entirely and enjoy the lightweight paper and grid or dot ruling.

  6. Undated Calendar Stickers from Stalogy and Midori. Looking to add planner or calendar functionality to a standard notebook or undated planner? These stickers create an instant calendar page, and the Stalogy stickers can be moved!

  7. Laban Greek Mythology Fountain Pen Inks. We are fully restocked on the Laban Inks, including favorites such as Athena Grey, Artemis Navy Blue, and my favorite Aphrodite Pink!

  8. Composition Books. I personally love the classic composition book formats, and we have a range to offer! Mr. Boddington’s Studio makes what most would consider to be a “classic” composition book, while the Rhodia Composition Books contain excellent fountain pen friendly Rhodia paper.

  9. Midori XS Mini Stationery Kit. I’ve been keeping one of these mini-sized accessory kits tucked into my briefcase. They include a stapler,

  10. WMS & Co. Self-Inking Stamp. Honestly, my single-most-used desk accessory that isn’t pen and paper has lately been my self-inking stamp from WMS & Co. If you receive an order from us, it creates the “letterhead” portion of the note tucked into each order! The price includes both the nickel-plated stamp and a voucher for your custom imprint.

Stalogy Limited Edition Covers

Thursday Drops: Pre-Pen Show Details and Mid-Year Restocking on Midori, TWSBI, and More!

July 13, 2023

In addition to the new arrivals from earlier this week and the launch of our T.G.S. x Hinze Pen Collaboration, we’ve begun the process of stocking up on inventory for the upcoming D.C. Pen Show and the San Francisco Pen Show! We plan to have our own table in San Francisco, and will be behind the table with our friends at Vanness Pens with a small selection of T.G.S.-exclusive goods in D.C. If any Hinze Pens remain, I will bring them to both shows, but please note that we are over halfway sold through this initial run so I don’t expect there to be a large selection left at that point.

Also in preparation for the D.C. and San Francisco Pen Shows (i.e., to “free up funds” :)), I’ve reactivated the “Gently Used” page with some notebooks and assorted stationery I found as I’ve been sorting through my own personal accumulation. Some are sealed, some are opened, but the notebooks are all unused. There are some less common Baron Fig notebooks and other assorted items that I’m just not going to get around to using. Everything can be combined with general purchases from the shop!

  1. T.G.S. x Hinze Pens Special Edition Fountain Pen + “Summer Sangria” Ink. We’ve collaborated with our friends at Hinze Pens to create this special release version of their “Elementar” fountain pen, complete with a black nano-ceramic nib and a limited edition red fountain pen ink that will only be sold with this initial run of pens.

  2. Stalogy Notebooks (including 2022 and 2023 Special Colors). We now have a large selection of 356-Day and 1/2 year Stalogy notebooks in the shop, in all colors including whatever we could get of the special edition covers in colors like “Fog” and “Forest.”

  3. Stalogy Calendar Stickers. Similar to the undated Midori MD Diary Stickers but with a bit more structure, these removable calendar stickers can help you turn your Stalogy notebook (or any notebook of your choice, actually), into a more structured planner.

  4. Anterique Stationers Ballpoints and Mechanical Pencils. I plan on bringing these excellent ballpoints and mechanical pencils to both shows, and will have them for sale across the full color spectrum! Honestly, I can’t wait to see the reaction to these pens in person. Most people wonder how you can improve upon the basic “click pen” mechanism, and then they feel these.

  5. Midori MD Dip Pens. If you’re seriously into fountain pen inks, you should have at least one dip pen that allows you to sample and compare inks without having to repeatedly ink and clean multiple fountain pens.

  6. Laban Greek Mythology Inks. We’re fully restocked on what’s probably my favorite current ink line, now including the insanely popular Aphrodite Pink (which isn’t really pink?) that nobody can keep in stock.

  7. Midori MD A4 Notebooks. It’s a toss-up between the Midori MD A4 notebooks and the standard A5 for our most popular everyday notebook! Note that both the A4 and the F3 Midori MD Cotton Notebook (the largest one) both fit the Midori A4 Notebook Covers.

  8. Midori MD Light Slim Notebooks (All Sizes). For those looking for a slimmer notebook that can fit different cover systems such as those from Roterfaden or Lochby, in addition to the Midori MD covers, check out the MD Light series. All sizes are available, including A4 with rulings!

  9. Midori MD Light 70th Anniversary Set. We still have stock of the 70th Anniversary MD Light Notebook Sets, which contain 7 different A5 notebooks, each with a different color thread binding and matching grid ruling.

  10. Lochby Venture Pouch. While I’ll also be bringing the rest of the Lochby system to both shows in various quantities, one of the top sellers at pen shows is easily the reversible “Venture Pouch”: a traditional pen pouch on the top, and a zippered pen/gear case when you flip it over. Because the Lochby Gear can be a bit difficult to visualize without seeing it in person, I’ve also started the process of uploading demonstration videos I’ve done to the YouTube Channel, and will be filming more in the future.

We always love to hear from readers! Come see us in D.C. and San Francisco!

Hinze Pen Update: VERY Limited Number of Pens with Crimson Nibs Available

July 7, 2023

A quick update: This afternoon I received a couple of pens with Crimson nibs, which are now available for sale in the shop. There is a slightly upcharge due to additional cost involved, so the pens with the special ink and this nib are $235 instead of the standard $225. I have inquired as to the availability of additional crimson nibs, which I will plan to make available for a nib swap/add-on purchase if enough people are interested. We now have standard stainless steel nibs and the black nano-ceramic nibs available for separate purchase if you would like multiple nib sizes and/or colors.

Thanks for all of your support so far! I look forward to doing more of these projects in the future.
